The factory rail type rockers kept the pushrods in alignment, but the answer really depends on the cam, more radical profiles should have them to keep the pushrods from getting out of line at high RPM even with rail rockers. If you use them you must have hardened pushrods and screw-in studs too.

you need guideplates or self aligning rockers or possibly pedistal mount rockers.

How about a GT-40p head. The rockers are pedistal mount. Not really gonna rev the engine that high, maybe to 6K every once and a while.

what do you think?

sorry I meant shaft mount not pedestal mount. I got my terms wrong.
here are some shaft mount ones

The pedistal mount still need guideplates or self aligning rocker tips or they will twist on their axis and fall off the valve.

Dont eff up your entire motor for lack of guideplates. You knock a rocker off and drop a valve, and you will wish you had them then!

the P heads use pedestal mount rockers, no need for guide plates. You DO need pedestal mount roller rockers though, unless you do a conversion to studs..

for how much they cost, why not? you wish you had them if you don't. just makes things much more stiffer.

are you confusing pedistal with shaft mount like I did? I think they would need SOMETHING to keep them in place. the LT4 rockers are pedistal and they don't have guide plates but they have self aligning roller tips.

Do fords have arced seats like the LS1s to keep the pedestal in place?

If you get GT40Ps, call Central Coast Mustang (www.centralcoastmustang.net). They have a good price on ready-built heads. They also sell GT40P-specific headers for early models. They will be a good source of info for you on the heads and how to set them up. I do believe that they offer them converted to studs, plates and roller rockers (not pedestal-mount), as well as pedestal-mount.

If you can "twist" the rocker on it's mount, use guide plates AND hardened push rods. If they are on a rail and can only pivot to open the valve, you might get away without.

just to back up the others...pedestal mount heads do NOT need guideplates. If you had any idea what the pedestal mount stuff looked like, it would be obvious that the rocker cannot misalign itself with the valve. Some of you people need to know what you're talking about before giving an 'answer' to a question.
