Do phenolic intake manifold spacers work? What do they do?

Are there any REAL gains from adding a 1" spacer to the intake manifold? or should i just install the cobra manifold without one? Do they really make power?

Honestly I put one on because I needed the clearence for the taller valve covers I had. I know that increasing the runner is supposed to make power but I couldn't tell the difference.

Most people (myself included) do it to clear taller valve covers. I put a 3/8" on mine. FWIW, I think longer runners = more hp, shorter runners = more torque, I think.

It DEFINITELY cools down the upper intake temperature which is good.

juiced, i have a cobra upper and lower manifold for sale from my 95. the upper was extrude honed and the lower hand ported. i have all the bolts, gasket, egr valve, etc.

Other way around, more runner length equals more low-end torque, less runner length equals higher horsepower peak. With all else being equal. Just look at the intake runner on a tractor, its long. Compare the Vic 5.0 to the Performer.

My 3/8" phenolic spacer kept the upper intake "cooler" for a longer period of time. But after driving for 30 minutes the upper intake is the same temp that it was before I put the spacer on.

Ah! Thanks for clearing that up, I couldn't remember which way it was. Makes sense now, that Vic intake has like NO runner length, lol.

Quick question for you guys w/the intake spacer: Does the 3/8 spacer cause any problem the egr connection from the passenger-side header? Any clearance issues with the stock hood/hood blanket?

I have the cobra intake with a 3/8" spacer. I have no clearance issues, although I have the hood blanket removed. But a few guys I know with the hood blanket still on and a spacer have no problems either. My EGR wouldn't fit back on my intake, so I took it off.

Why wouldn't your egr fit back on your intake? Do you have a 94-95 cobra intake?

Yea, 94/95. It might have fit if I messed with it more, but I accidentally snapped it trying to bend it a little bit, lol.

Thats cool. I just want to eliminate any possible bumps in the road as far as installation in concerned. I felt like getting rid of my egr after connecting that stupid egr tube that came with my BBK headers.

My egr has a low self esteem after all the verbal abuse I gave it when i put my headers on.

Make sure if you do delete the EGR, that you can tune it out of the computer somehow. That push the plunger halfway down thing doesn't work as good as people say, lol.

I guess not, lol. I want to delete the EGR and cap the header so bad, but it will be a PITA when I have to smog it.

deleting the egr is the way to go. i capped the header, made a block off plate to bolt to the manifold in place of the egr, and the chip tells the computer that there is no egr valve. much cleaner look under the hood.

I needed mine to clear my fox valve covers, egr and hood clearance isnt an issue for me thanks to the cobra r hood and no EGR.

Why do you want to delete the EGR? It's a win-win system when it's working properly. Added gas mileage, and no power loss as it's ignored at idle and under WOT.

I like the look under the hood with no egr, and it's just easier to work on the car with out all that crap in the way.

i have a 3/8 spacer on my cobra and fits just fine under the stock hood w/blanket

im only using it to clear fox VC's
