Stock? No more than 5200, IMO.

V8's are not really designed to be revved the pi$$ out of,

Thats why they achieve there highest Tourque numbers pretty low down and the max HP levels are usually around 4600 to 5200,

Theres your guidelines,

You bend a pushrod, Your on your own,
You have been warned

stock motor 5000-5200...anything higher your reving higher & actually making less HP (typically). Besides depending on how weak the stock valve springs are you may float the valves earlier than that.On the dyno when my car was basically stock it was all done by 4900 rpm

I always thought on a stock motor around 5500rpms is where you should shift.

I shift around 5500, I have a rev limiter at 6000

Someone tell me my optimum shift point. I have a 92 Coupe. All that is done is H pipe, bullet mufflers, GT40 intake, ecam, timming, free mods, air filter, no silencer. I was told to shift around 5600rpm, correct? I've been shifting at 5900-6k rpm.

If you had a set of heads other than stock on there, I'd shift at 59-6000rpm. The stock heads, regardless of what else you've got done are holding you back from making more power up that high.

The only way to find out is to go to a dyno.

I currently shift around 5600 rpm due to my intake.

Back when I was stock, I was shifting at 5600 rpm due to the crappy 2.73 rear gears. The rpm drop was so great with those gears, so if I shifted any lower I would be dropping out of my best power range.

Another thing to keep in mind is the inconsistancy of stock ford tach's. They have been notoriously off from car to car. Using a tech calculator and speed I found mine to be pretty accurate at most rpms. It's usually doesnt get way off until you get into the upper rpm range.

lights set for 5500... seems to be pretty good for me, but I never fooled around with it! This is also on a Autometer Tach, not the stocker!

Yeah I know, when I got the car it had the e cam in there already, I wish the cam was stock. I'am just trying to pull out the best time I can for this car mostly on free mods, since I'am building a 357 185 AFR for the coupe.

Going to try 5600 RPM shifts tonight, see where that gets me, I'll have it dynoed pretty soon.(Have Autometer SportComp Gauge )

What would you use to check the tach accuracy? Hopefully not a lot of $$

You'll know if you've revved it too far, you'll feel the power drop off.

I personally never hit the red line, and rarely go past the yellow. I don't have a big budget, and my engine's worth more to me than any race.

I hit red once, to test the power, didn't feel too potent shortly after yellow, but usually I get it up to about 5500 with 2.73's.

well the e cam pretty much peaks and mostly stops making power after about 4500 rpms but with the gt40 i would just shift around 5500 rpms
-someone correct me if i'm wrong about the e cam but i'm pretty sure after my friend showed me a dyno sheet of his with the cam.
