Does a K&N really make a difference?

I have K&N's on all my cars. I'm not sure how much a difference they make. Especially the Mustang since I just have the drop in, but I do like the fact that I never have to buy another filter again. It's a lot easier to just clean them and go. That could just be me though.

Seems a lot easier to me to just buy new filters than having to clean/oil a K&N.
You don't really save much money with a K&N either as you still have to buy the cleaning kits every once in a while plus the cost of the time wasted having to clean it.

I have one, probably like 2 HP difference, eh whatever.

Ok so you buy a can of cleaner/oil, mines lasted me a year so far and I clean mine obsesively. Any how youre at home, you pull it out, clean it, let it dry over night, spray it in the morning pop her in. No time wasted little money spent.

You want a paper filter? Drive to the auto part store, go through the catalog or wait in line for the cust. service guy and find the right filter. You drive home, you repeat the steps above minus 1-2 minutes of cleaning.

K&N is faster and cheaper in the long run.

I bought a 1997 GT in May of this year. It had 53,000 miles. Stock as a rock. On the way home, I went to Advance Auto and bought the K&N. When I got home, I yanked the air snorkel out and put the K&N in. I went for a ride (remember back to back rides with about 3 miles total under my belt) and it was totally different. Oh, when I took the old paper filter out it was black as hell and it said Ford Motorsports on it. Original with 7 years and 53,000 miles??? Maybe so. If I put a brand new paper one in, it might have made the same difference    UH OH, I think I just told you all this nonsense and I didn't help you or answer the question. :rlaugh: :rlaugh: :rlaugh:

I never Looked at spending time on my stang as a bad thing. Going shopping with the wife maybe, but not working on me stang :D

Keep in mind K&N recommends replacing the filter after 25 washings. My Stang sees only highway driving in non dusty conditions, so they last a long long time. Independent tests show they do flow better than a paper filter, but they also don't filter as well as a paper filter. In dusty conditions [like with my truck] I don't use them.
I test all performance upgrades that I do on my Stang with my G-tech Comp., the K&N drop-in filter had 0 effect on my 1/4 mile times, it may have made a small HP increase, say 1-2 HP, but was not measurable in the 1/4 times. But hey, if you find, say, 2 or 3 other little mods that give you a 2-3HP increase each, added together will yeild a noticable increase. As they say, every little bit helps.
