In school (Farmingdale Univ. auto engineering) we tested synthetic motor oils on engine dynos and found no horsepower gains at all. I agree that they can increase life of parts but I don't believe in power gains. Royal Purple WILL give you 10hp, its formulation creates methane when warmed up in the crank case, that methane flows past piston rings into combustion chamber increasing HP, however this effect is temporary you would be lucky if you got that extra HP for more then a few passes at the track.
Mobil 1 is not a Full PAO Synthetic oil. it is a Group III but it is one of the best Group III's on the market. they dropped it back from a Group IV because of Manufacture pressure to make the oil compatable with most cars on the street today, this was and Exxon decision when they merged into Exxon/Mobil. I personally think it was a bad Decision but it was a business one, to increase market share.
I know some here have heard about the lawsuit that Mobil had against Castrol, or vise versa, over the definition of a synthetic motor oil and what exactly constituted a synthetic motor oil. The case came out in favor of Castrol, ruling that Castrol could call their "extra refined crude oil' synthetic motor oil. This changed the definition of what could be called a synthetic motor oil.
Shortly afterwards, Mobil 1 came out with a new formula that replaced the Tri-Synthetic formula now called Super-Syn. The oil is now a bit cheaper than before and is is darker and only says "Fully Synthetic" not 100% Synthetic Motor oil on their packaging. It still has the same odor though, so It most likely has some highly refined dyno oil added to it for compatability reasons.

Mobil 1 is about one Hydro Crack away from 100% it's like 97%
M1 is about the same price as RP so who not use RP? I buy mine from Pep Boys for 6.39 per quart,
Edit* Don't forget, it does not matter what oil you get if the Filter is crap. spend the money on a good filter
WIX, K&N, or Mobil 1 are all good filters that also have anti-siphon valves to keep dirty oil from re-entering the engine
