Drag strip disappointment

Went to Firebird last night. Place was packed. My best time was 2.4 60', 15.60 at 90 mph. I just bought this 67 with a .060 overbore, Mellings cam (one step above stock) Holley 600 cfm w/Edelbrock Hirise, Hookers, 4 spd with 3.55 posi. Had some nasty wheel hop on take off. I know I need more practice leaving but I was hoping for high 14's. Any hope of reaching that?
 
get some traction bars to help with the wheel hop. does your car have a pinion snubber? maybe you could get a adjustable one? what rpm were you launching at? what size are your tires? what is the altitude of the track?
 
you know the cam specs? it might be possible to get you in to the 14's. start by getting some good tires on that car, and get your 60' times down in the 1.85-1.90 range. bump you ignitino timing to around 12 initial. run the valves and make sure they are adjusted properly, in fact you might tighten the up about a 1/8 of a turn as it will trick the engine into thinking it has more duration that it really does, though not much more. if your cam is a mechanical cam, then tighten up the valve lash about 10% or so fo rthe sam reason. run good synthetic oils in the drivetrain. loosen the brake adjustment untill the shoes just touch the drums, then back off a notch. that should get you fairly close.
 
Everybodies first trip is a slap into reality.The car feels like it can beat anything on the street,then the strip is a whole different thing.Looks like your speed is good,but your traction is limiting you as it was said.Try some drag radials and more practice,it'll happen
 
Dude, welcome to the club. I ran a 15 my first time out then dropped it to a 14.5 the next pass. Then a 14 now a 13.5. It takes time and practise. Like everybody has said get some drag radials or slicks if you can trailer it or put them in the trunk. Traction bars will help out a lot as well, I don't have them but should before my next outting. Again, all comes with practise and and seat time.
 
Yeah, reality checks suck. Bigest thing I can tell you has already been stated more or less. Biggest thing in drag racing is getting out of the hole. At tenth at the line is worth more than a tenth in the 1/4. If your rear can take it, put on good bars and tires and drop the clutch hard. You drop to a 1.8, and you'll see a huge difference !!!
