drivebelt help please!!

I'm not much of a car fixing guy at all, but I like to drive my fiances 03 GT. I used to have an 01 GT but sold it to get a truck. still need to change my sig. it's only been 3 years.

Anyway, the cars been really squeaky lately. Worst when it's rained and cold. So she ran and picked up a new belt and Haynes manual so we could tackle this. Looking through the manual at the belt setup and I'm confused now. The schematic in the manual doesn't match what's under the hood.

I realize this is probably really simple to do but i'm stumped. Could someone show me what parts are what and what needs to be adjusted to get this new belt on.

I've attached a pic of what i'm look at under the hood. Edit it in paint or something and repost so i know what to look at.

Put the belt around all pulley's except for ALT, then crank on the tensioner and put the belt of the ALT pulley.

thanks for the quick reply. I'm still stumped though. For one i'm not sure which one is the tensioner and second my belt doesn't follow the same flow of your attached schematic.

Attached is the schematic that you sent. The top is my setup, the bottom being the original.

1. which # is the tensioner
2. any idea what the ? is?

#7 is the tensioner in the pic, all you need is a 3/8 ratchet or breaker bar to replace the belt and it takes about 2 min.


just install it the same way as in the pic silverbullett posted

On the photo you posted, you can see the square slot on the tensioner arm. Put a 3/8" rachet in the square hole and turn it light you are tightening a bolt to the right. That will release tension and let you slip the belt off.

Then route it over the pullies and open up the tensioner again and slip it over the final pulley.

Very easy to do. Dealers usually charge big money for this..it's a joke.

BTW, Goodyear Gatorbacks are highly recommended belts to use

It is really easy. Mine has a small two-bolt bracket that is removed to gain access to the square tensioner hole, maybe you didn't notice that? At least I am thinking there was....lol...

The tensioner takes a 3/8" drive I believe. Push clockwise if memory serves me.

ok, i'll try that. but what's the mystery object with the ? mark? i'll find out if something doesn't work afterwords.

any ideas?

The ? is a ribbed pulley that is an idler (atleast on a 00GT). Item 8 is a non ribbed idler pulley. You should not have to unbolt anything to get the belt on. I did it yesterday.

k, well the belt is replaced. it was pretty simple. i guess it was the flow of the belt that was screwing me up.

i still had to route it the way it was on the car and not the way it was in the provided schematic. it would have rubed against the tensioner.

look at the pic to see what i mean.
