Driveshaft Question

OK i'm a little confused....how did you get the tranny side out without taking the axle end off the axle first? Are you separating the U joints to take out the shaft? If so, unless they're needing replaced, this isnt needed. Just unbolt the 4 bolts from the rear end and slide the input shaft out of the trany. Otherwise, if you've unbolted all 4 of the bolts from the rear end and it's still holding strong, it's probably just sticking somehow. Beat it with a rubber mallet.

See if you can get a flat blade screw driver or pry bar between them to do a bit of prying. Some penetrant may help - they're probably rusted together; heat (mapp gas or propane torch) will also usually loosen things up. Just don't get it so hot that you toast the pinion seal.

They usually lock tight them together, they are a farely thick bolt, don't be scared to apply a little more leverage

I swear, Ford ****ed us when they put the 12 MM 12 point bolts for the driveshaft to pinion flange. Alright man.. Here is the absolute best way to do it.... First off... I broke 3 Snap on 12 MM 12 points attempting to get mine off. Yes there is locktite on there. Do NOT USE anything other then a 12 point, 12 MM. What you can do it with the rear tires still on the ground, get a 12 MM wrench and using the closed end (12 point) put it on the bolt... then get a 20-21 MM wrench and put the closed end on the open end of the 12 MM. Use it for leverage. It will come off that way. Or you can use a cheater pipe, aka a hollow piece of pipe about 2 inches wide, and you can hammer one end oval to make it fit tighter. Don't use a socket and wrench, you'll end up busting your knuckles and breaking sockets. After you get 1 or two off, jack the car up from the rear (or move the car a little forward or backward) and turn the driveshaft to get to the other bolts then lower the tires back on the ground so they don't turn when you use all that leverage to break the bolts loose. Also, reapply locktite to the bolts when installing because they will wiggle themselves loose. Locktites is there from the factory for a reason. Hope this helped.

guys who posted after Michael, he has the four 12mm twelve point bolts off. the DS and rear end are just stuck together. swinging press and or heat should remove it.

Nick, it must be nice to be thin. i could not dream of getting under the car even slightly w/o jacking it up about 3 feet.

lol, true. I guess I'm too used to having a lift. hah If it's stuck then yes... Heat it up. Go to Home Depot and get a propane blow torch. Never really heard of one getting stuck. I'd give it a huge fricken whack with the Big ****in' hammer, aka Ford tool.

i hear ya. wish i had a lift, and one of my favorite tools is a BFH (4#'er).
