Dyeing convertible top

Has anyone ever used any kind of dye on their convertible tops? I have a white top now and would like to go black but just don't have the money to buy a complete new top right now. Surely with all the dye's out their right now one would work. Any ideas or pointers?

vert tops put up with an insane amount of stress and abuse and I dont know of a dye or paint that will hold up to that kind of treatment. I see it looking fine until you raised/lowered the top a few times and then it would leave cracks or fall off completely in some areas.

I see where you are coming from and thought about the same thing. I was now thinking more of some kind you soak a rag in or something and wipe it on and let it soak in instead of the rattle can dye like you use to dye your interior pieces. If not oh, just an idea.

do you have a cloth or vinyl top? canvas may take a dye, but I cant think of a way to make it uniform.

yup...my dads top is dyed black right now...holds up fine unless you leave the top down for a few months...

Y'know, I never thought of it until just now, but I wonder if that Duplicolor Vinyl & Fabric paint would work on it? As stated, there's a pretty good chance it'll rub off if you put the top up and down a lot, due to all of the flexing and such, so perhaps that particular avenue wouldn't be best for most cases ... but what the hell. My top is pretty well shot and definitely need of replacement, anyways. I might try this, myself, sometime this winter just for giggles. Wouldn't cost much, and I could probably do it with two or three cans. If it comes off, oh well, I'll just replace the top at some point later, anyhow (in black, of course).

That is, of course, unless someone else feels like sacrificing their own pristine-condition 'vert top as an experimental lab rat for the benefit of the Stangnet community...?

Cool guys, I really expected to get beat down on here for just asking about this.

Ryan, what did your dad use to do his?

I think I am going to check around to see what all products there are out there. If it don't work to well it isn't gonna hurt my feelings much. My car has been repainted before and is a really bright white and there is no way a white top will look right on it plus this one is getting stained and looks like crap. I can always replace it later this winter if needed. If I find something I think might work I'll let you know. Thanks again fella's.

duplicolor vinyl dye....


we did it becasue he didnt know weather to go with a white top or a black top when he buys one.....

what is the latest on this dye? i can replace my white nasty top with a black top for just 165 bucks (mustangs unlimited) but the rear curtain is not included. nothing wrong with my window, that part is 400 bucks!!! i will try to keep that and just replace the entire top which is rotted out from all the clorax and junk i have attempted to remove the black spots. so TWO questions. anyone ever replace a top, scale it from 1 (easiest) to 10 (hardest). my hydraulic pump is also gone, where can i get one of those? thanks all
