I'm considering making some simple alum door panels for my 70 but don't want to use standard arm rest. Is there a way to convert the mechanism so that I can use the early lever style handles to open the doors?

You could take the mechanism for the 65-67 type and mount it in the door .
It mounts from the inside of the door through a hole and is secured by three screws. You would have to make rods but that would not be hard to do.
