I was wondering if it would be easier to just drop the tank, or if there is access to the pump from the top like taking the back seat out or from the trunk???

you have to drop the tank. EMPTY TANK is the Key... there are some screws around the fuel tank neck. Also there are some from the bottom side too.

Also you will probably need a new filler neck seal.

I gotta tell you .......................

I was not looking forward to that job when I did mine.

It turned out to be about twice as easy as I was expecting.

Pretty straight forward.

Don't make any sparks!

Use some brass material or wood to loosen the ring thing.

Good Luck

Try and get things really clean around the ring first.

Then try something to soften & lube the gasket.

I can't stress enough the no sparks thing. Over the years I've been on these forums, I've seen several talk about fires starting. Please be safe here.

One last thing ....................

Since you are having trouble with that big o-ring gasket ............

You'll most likely have to round up a new one with the method I gave above.

Good Luck

Use a brass punch to get the ring to turn, after cleaning around it. Brass wont make sparks. I sprayed WD 40 around it also. Try to be noce to the parts, or you will have to replace them..

Hell I did it with a friend and half a tank left and it was still pretty easy, just got alittle wet

Go to the autoparts store and buy a pump to pump it all out and do it totally empty.

Did you try PB blaster on the ring? I would try that. I only have steel punches so I used a rubber thing to keep it from sparking.

I will agree its kind of a rip off. I paid 17 something at the Ford Garage. On the other hand it will probably leak if you don't change it... Mine did anyway.

Good info so far.

There is a write-up in the How-to sticky, in case it helps.

Yup, loosening the ring was a major pain in the ass!

Everything else was simple as pie.

It is contained in the first thread at the top of this page (it says something like "How-To Sticky).

The write up is by David (5Spd GT) and covers things fairly decently, though it was written from when he did the pump on his Fox IIRC. He had a NE in the past so dont hold me to that. Certainly a good resource nonetheless (he has part numbers and stuff listed).

Forget the punch!

Just go over where they keep the raw stock of materials like straps of Aluminum, threaded rods and the like.

Pick yourself out a length of some kind of brass stock and use it as a punch.

Must think out side of box Grasshopper

It ain't about if I could figure out HOW to do it

I just didn't want to go to ALL that trouble and stuff like:

Get out the floor jack
Crawl under there
Get all dirty
Yada
Yada
