I heard a rumor that Explorer Express might be working on an Eaton type supercharger kit for the 4.0l mustang, so I sent them an email over the weekend looking to get the low down. Here's what I got back...

Hi Rob,

The prototype work for the 05 Mustang 4.0 is complete. Most of the tooling has been ordered. Hope to have production parts in 8-12 weeks. The price for the CA model will be $3995. The 49 state hi-po model will be a little higher.

Our Ranger kit adds up to 78 RWHP. The Mustang kit will be better because it uses a larger supercharger unit for less intake heat and a more direct inlet system. Tuning will be via SCT X-calibrator.

Attached is a photo of the 49 state prototype X-CHARGER.

Thanks for your inquiry,
Dave Vanek
Explorer Express

There goes this years bonus check! Looks like an Eaton M112 blower which is bigger than the M62 used in their Ranger/Explorer kit. Can't wait to see some dyno numbers from this. Hopefully this will provide the low RPM kick in the pants that the 4.0L needs without having to refill NOS bottles.

Rob

I thought they were using the m90 not the m112 (cobra blower). They've been in development for a long time now. Its been cool to watch it come along, but that price really dissapoints me. Hopefully powerhouse411's turbo kit wont be that high, or else im goin the zex route.

P.S. The m112 blower has the air inlet on the other side, im 99.9% sure thats the m90 in the picture (as it was in the previous photos i posted months ago). I was kinda hoping they were going to use the m112 blower though, because that would mean you could adapt the KB 2.2 or 2.4 blowzilla blowers on there. Oh well, thatd be way too much power anyway unless you had a built motor.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "air inlet on the other side". All of the Eaton blowers have the intake high and on the back side. It sure looks like the M112 to me because it looks like the case is longer than the M90. Oh well, time will tell.

the CA model will be $3995?

That's an awful lot of money for less that 80 horses dont you think?

Yeah, I got that same e-mail months ago... before I put the Zex... I would have thought it would be out by now.. or very soon at least...

When you figure I get my bottles fille for $25 a piece.... hmmm it will take me 120 bottle so make up the difference between my Zex and this kit...

I really wanted either the S/C or Turbo... but to be honest for a well as the Zex is running and as much money as these units are coming in at... I think I just may stay with the Zex...

supercharger

I think I would just get the procharger and supercharge it for 3,599.99. They claim at www.yourperformancesource.com that you get 9psi. Plus produce up to 400 fwhp. Im thinking about putting this in my stang.

Supercharger vs. Turbocharger

There has been some debate on another thread about whether or not the Procharger will put out the 400 horses it claims. That is about a 90% increase over what we have already. BUT it seems to be the only kit out there at the moment.

I am still interested in the Turbo kit that Powerhouse is working on. Haven't heard much on it lately, though. I am sure that it will be more expensive and harder to install than a supercharger, but I think I will go turbo when I pay the car off (3 years from now). From my corrspondence with them, the system will include all fueling components, as well.

The m112 supercharger on my 2003 cobra has the throttlebody on the opposite side. And last i heard they were using the m90 supercharger. Im sure my post is around here somewhere if i do a search. let me check.

The last email I have from Dave at Explorer Express states that they are using the MP90.

We are hard at work on the 05 Mustang 4.0 X-CHARGER. It is similar to the Ranger kit except the inlet is on the driver's side. The Mustang kit will use an MP90 supercharger unit, rather than the MP62 with the Ranger kit. Strangely, there is more room under the Mustang hood, so the 90 will fit. The 90 means lower inlet temps (more power), but a little less response at lower engine speeds. That show be OK in the Mustang because it's a lot lighter than the Ranger or Explorer and the engine revs faster.

The question is if it's 400 flywheel or rear wheel. In a recent magazien article in 5.0 Mustang & Super Ford an automatic car made (I think) about 290 hp at the wheels. That's pretty close to 400 at the crank. I don't have the issue in hand for the actual numbers.

for 290rwhp to be 400fwhp would require an insane drivetrain loss, which i doubt the 05 auto is anymore than 17 or 18%. at 18% it would be 328rwhp.

you mean for 290 whp to equal 400 hp there would need to be insane drivetrain loss.... because our cars are rwd not fwd.... lol

Still pricey, I'm still leaning towards a zex kit. I will only need the power at the track. No use to me on the street, already had enough tickets...and I kill plenty of ricers with my current setup.

Yep, that's pretty much my story here! That's why i haven't put the remote bottle opener in! Oppurtunity may knock, but temptation kicks down the door! LOL!
