im thinking about changing out the intake on my 302. currently i have a holley 600cfm, i dont know anything else of about it, and a performer manifold. in my garage i have a edelbrock 600 cfm that i bought a while back for another car, along with a performer RPM manifold. what should i put on my car. shes a mild lil motor. shes a daily driver but i like to go so i want good power. ive heard holley has better performance but they go out of tune..which i agree. i have to tune my like every two weeks. so suggestions???

If you really want to go with what you have on hand, I vote the RPM and holley. Either send it off and get it professionally tuned or get a good book and learn. I know I've learned a lot and just about have mine purring.

If you want something diffrent I would suggest a demon and air gap...but thats just what I'm going to do when I get my AFRs next year

Holley,

It's been a Set and Forget Carb for me.

But I might try a Demon.

best performance will be had with the holley card and performer rpm intake. The edelbrock carb will sacrifice some ponies but be easier to maintain.

Holley and the Performer RPM, As for the Holley getting out of tune, that's BS, pure and simple. It's the engine that causes that, not the carb. Only other thing that would possibly cause it is dirt or water in the fuel, and that WILL affect other carbs as well.

The Holley is truely a better performer but not as consistent. The Edel is very consistent, but not as much power. However, I'd ditch them both for the Demon! I was very impressed when I changed over.

getting a demon wouldn't change the manifold. the rpm would still be the best bet.

I have the Air Gap and a Demon 65o on my stroker. The Demon carb is a nicely built piece, the newest version has one screw for idle adjustment, if you decide on a Demon look for that one. Three less steps in getting it set up.

Holley and RPM.

Get the Holley rebuilt and properly tuned... then leave it be.

the holly was rebuilt and im still not happy with it. my cold start choke sticks, even with a real non-stiff spring. o yea...when i get on her real good, i sometimes smell gas...i think she leaks at the mixture screws, or at least the one on pass side. is this common?

Choke? What's a Choke? ..............................................Wait, is it that thing that blocks the airflow thru the primary side? That's the FIRST part of a Hollley I get rid of Nothin but trouble

Out of the 5 stangs I've had I've had 3 Holleys and 2 Edelbrocks. I had some minor tuning issues with the first 2 Holleys but the third made me switch. The car would run great one day and the car would barely run the next and then back again. Worst part is these were BRAND NEW carbs. After 2 yrs. I gave up and got an Edelbrock. With these carbs it seems like set it and forget it...for me at least. The next carb I buy will be a Demon. Just my .02.

The RPM is considered a "high rise" intake.
That is not a very technical term though.
The more correct terms would be single plane, dual plane, tunnel ram, 180 degree, etc...
You can have a low or high rise anything and it doesn't make nearly the difference as the other terms.

To the question of which is best for you, that all depends on your combo and what you primarily do with your car.
For all around street manners and rv cam, the RPM is a good intake. In your shoes, I would have to be really unhappy to go and remove that intake and start experimenting with new ones.
Dave

Edit: The carb spacers are generally a 'band-aid' for an intake that lacks performance in a desired rpm range.
A four hole spacer adds torque and throttle response by giving the carb a stronger vacuum signal at the throttle blades. The open spacer does nothing for vacuum signal to the carb, but adds plenum area for higher rpm operation. This can make the low rpm response a little softer and may require a larger accellerator pump in some cases.
The taller the spacer, the more magnified these qualities become.
My experience with the RPM was that it was a very mild intake and lacked top end, so I ran mine with a 2" open spacer. It added a few usable rpm up top, but not much.
