I recently have been having a problem with my car. Every once in a while, the tach will show half the actual rpm's, and the check engine light will come on. I checked the codes and they were 223 (Dual Plug (DPI), SPOUT or IDM circuit fault) and 224 (Failure in ignition coil primary circuit). When this happens, the engine runs fine, no loss of power or anything. I am figuring it has something to do with the DIS module or one of the coil packs. I am just looking for some input on the problem while I try and trace the problem. btw it's a 92 dual plug 2.3 motor. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just went through that. I never knew that one of the first signs of a bad tfi module was the jump/incorect tach, Always thought it was just the wiring and didnt realy wont to chace wires just for the tach. So ran it with the tach messed up for about a month with no problems. Then one day lost spark to cyl #1 on on both coils..... so went out and bought two new coils. And the problem went away for a couple days. Then itcame back with a vengence. No spark to 1 and 4 this time. So replaced the ignition module and grounded the engine better and havent had a problem since. So you might wont to pick up a tfi when you have the money.

I wish someone would put this as a sticky

"Jumpy Tach or a Tach that reads half the real value means your ignition module is taking a crap"
