one last question on wiring the 91 cougar 5.0 HO engine into my ranger.....pin 30 from the EEC goes to the ignition switch/nuetral safety switch. my problem is that this is not an automatic I am putting this into, so.....i am lost on what to do with this, as i also dont have a clutch safety switch in the truck either and i am running a 78 T-18 4 speed. any help is appreciated. thanks!

There is a hardware difference between an auto processor & a manual processor. The difference is because of the way the NDS [neutral drive switch, manual transmission] & the NSS [neutral safety switch, auto transmission] are wired. They are both wired to the same pin#30 but the auto trans wiring grounds the pin to the starter solenoid & the manual grounds to signal return, during crank mode there is a voltage spike sent to pin-30 so the auto trans processor has a diode on pin 30 where as the manual processor doesn't, most of the time this won't cause a problem unless you get into a prolonged crank condition.

Those that want to convert their automatics to manuals, and swap the ECM, need to clip the wire going to pin 30 or else the ECM will fry the trace off the board. This leaves the manual EEC unable to dump codes, which looks for the loop through the neutral sensing switch of the T5 transmission.

that was informative but too specific for me.....

this is an automatic computer (L1C) being used on a manual transmission truck. i dont need a clutch pedal switch in it. i just want to hit the key regardless of if i have the clutch pedal pressed in or not, and have it start. so, do i leave it unhooked altogether, ground it, or give it a crank 12v source? thanks!

not grounding pin #30 just means the EEC won't throw codes - if that is not a problem, don't hook up that pin.

so just leave pin 30 unhooked or remove the pin altogether and it will start anyway?

you can leave it unhooked on the wire end (insulated) or remove the pin - take your choice.
