Im about to re-do my brakes and I want to go to a power booster but have 10 inches of vacuum at idle. I was told you need 16inches for it to work properly.

I cant go to a hydroboost unit.

Im considering an electric vacuum pump.
Is there anyone out there using one of these?
do they work good, and how loud are they?

You may 16 for a constant use. But have you thought about just a vacuum container ? The container holds the vacuum until you need it. Hell, you may even be able to make one of those.

Good idea, but its a street car with repetative braking,so I want a guarantee it will stop when I brake everytime, I want the same result everytime I brake.I cant afford that one time when I hit the car in front of me.
There are a few different companies making these pumps.
New electric vehicles come with these pumps too.

Are you running a radical cam to get that 10 inches of vacuum? My engine has 14 inches of vacuum at idle and is adequate for the power booster.

My stroker cleveland has a bit over 10" of vac and I use a vac can. They guys who installed it tried a vac pump (ssbc?) and they did not like it and the can works fine for me. Never a hard pedal.

the cam is on the bigger side.

I'll consider the can idea, but will wait to get more feedback on pump users and can users.

I will be using a slightly smaller booster too, 8" but not as long as stock.fitment issues.

I run between 10-12 at idle and don't have any problems. You almost never brake at idle (other than being stopped, which works fine). Hang a vacuum gauge on it and see what your vacuum is when you are driving normally. You might be surprised.

Hydroboost is the only way to go.

buddy in a pontiac did one of those $350 elec pumps, it was loud and didnt work too well for him, he went with the canister. The newer cobras use the hyrda booster.

Keep in mind that the transmission type makes a big difference here. You can get away with less vacum if you are running a manual transmission.

I started running an electric vac pump when my valves were leaking worse and worse. It worked really quite well. I went out of my way to muffle it by adding an extra baked beans can muffler to it which brought it down to a level that couldnt be heard over the engine.

I am in the middle of a rebuild and will be looking to sell it pretty soon. Let me know if you are interested in it! It wouldnt have even done 24hrs of work
