Electrical people please help! spout connector

i bought an 89 Lx a little while ago and have been going through it to get it running perfectly again. I was wondering why it was running a little rough so I went to set timing the other day. I was just about to remove the spout connector....and noticed it was missing!! The guy I bought the car from apparently lost it. It has been a real b**ch to find also. My question is...If I snip the two wires that are going into the plug can I make my own? If my understanding is correct all the piece does that goes into the end of the plug is make the connection? So if I found another plug setup like that with two wires going into it can't I make my own? Any input will be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks

I don't remember which, but one of my cars has that custom paper clip spout connector. Works great!

It is available from your local Ford or Lincoln Mercury dealer. Base part #14489. I think the full part # is E35Z-14489-A. Not totally sure of the part number, I'm off work this week recovering from surgery so I can't check it for you! I keep one on the shelf at work and some of my techs have a bunch of them in their tool boxes.

Go to the junkyard and grab a couple. You should be able to find one off of a large selection of Ford vehicles.

All very good posts. I would make a jumper and then either get a new one (a la Bobcat - we hope you recover quickly BTW) or hit the J/Y. It seems like more than a few Fords used the same SPOUT connector.

I suppose one could drill a hole in the top of the plastic SPOUT chip and run a zip tie or string through it and tie it to the harness (so when the SPOUT connector is removed, it cant walk away).

Hey guys, thanks a lot. Yeah, I def. think that I will jump it for now and then get one via, junkyard or dealership. Great info bobcat, (get well from surgery by the way) I have tried to find this part from a couple of dealerships to no avail. They either don't carry it anymore or have no idea what I am talking about, lol. Just curious what your opinions are about this though. Would not having the spout connector plugged in greatly affect the way the car runs? What I am trying to get at is...my car has kinda of a rough idle at times and then clears up when its warm usually and I was just wondering if this might be related to the missing spout connector. It has done this since I bought it and this is the first time I went looking for the spout connector so I am assuming that it has been missing all along. Thanks a lot guys.

Josh, Did the previous owner have the timing set pretty high?

The lowest I ran locked out timing was about 26* so I can comment about how it would feel to drive around at 10-14*.

I am actually not sure what the timing is set at right now. I got so frustrated when I found the spout missing that I didn't even think to check what it was set at currently, haha...something I should probably do just to check.

Yes, it would affect how it would run significantly. You will almost notice a change as soon as you plug it on.


One time at the track i decided to bump my timing from 10 degrees to 14 degrees just to see how it would do. I took the spout out and set it in the radiator and then forgot to replace it afterwards.

I went from running 14.2's to 15.1's!! I made about 3-4 runs and was getting frustrated that i could only manage a 14.9 at best after that.

Next day, went to wash my car and saw the Spout still sitting in the radiator.

Well you are very right! I just jumped the connection and the idle cleaned right up and the car seems to be running much better now! thanks a lot guys.

You can cut the wires and just wire up a toggle switch. It works the same way
