Using the wrong year switch will do the same thing in Mustangs, I don't know about trucks. See www.autozone.com for truck wiring diagrams.

You will need to replace the Multi Function Switch. The handle plugs into it. It is actually one piece with the handle. You can remove the handle but this then renders the switch inoperable. I see this often. Older F250 and other fords, you could replace just the "stick". Newer ones the handle will come out, but ruins the switch.

Check the connector under the dash on the side of the steering column. Never heard of any trouble with the pigtail, but you never know. Also, be very wary of the bright yellow wire. YELLOW WIRE = BAD! That would be the airbag. Wrong move and BOOM! Just pull the airbag fuse before starting any work near the airbag wiring. Hopes this helps.

I have worked on a few ford trucks, various models for the same problem. On thing I have noticed is the ones with tilt have a tendency for the plug in the back of the switch to either come loose or the wires pull out of the connector. Something else for you to look for.
