Are there any differences between the 289 C-code and A-code engine blocks?

I'm in the planning stages of restoring (and modding) my dad's 65 convertable. He bought it new but has had it parked in the back of his garage since 1972. The car is a 289 A-code. It was stolen in 67 and the radiator hose popped off as the crooks were driving it; they overheated the engine and cracked the block. My dad got the car back and had a Ford service parts replacement 289 installed. Trying to determine if the engine is the correct engine for the car. That will factor in my decision to keep or replace the motor with something else.

They replaced the short block and transferred over heads, intake, carb, etc. The casting # on the block is C5AZ-6009-A. Any insight would be much appreciated!

there were no differences in the 65-early 68 c/a code intakes. they both were the same casting for a 4v carb.

as for the block, i'm not aware of a c5az. in 1964 the 289's engine cast was c5ae-6015-c, which was later changed to e. in 66, 289's were c6ae-6015-c. in the lifter valley they had wf in the lifter valley. in 67, near the end of production, cleveland ran out of 289 blocks and started using 302 blocks, which was c8-0e-6015-a and had 302 in the lifet valley. mind you, these were still 289's, due to the 289 cam, crank, etc. then in 68, cleveland made only 302's, but windsor made 289's. windsor made a bunch of 302 blocks that were used on 289's after the stock of 289's was used up, these were c8ae-6015-b with 302 in the lifter valley. at the end of 68 a few c6ae-6015-c blocks were put into cars.

i'm not familiar with the c5az-6009 engine cast, but if it was a ford replacement, it might be difficult to determine if it is the correct engine for the car.

however, i know c5az was used by ford in some trucks, and in 67+ big blocks i believe. i'm not entirely sure, as everywhere i've looked has no information on c5az-6009

are you 100% positive that you read the cast number correctly?

you usually need to take the starter motor off to see it correctly, and clean up all the dirt and grime that has accumulated

Thanks for the info. I'll have to go back and check the casting number.

C5AZ would be the part number, not the casting number. C5AE is a casting number.
