Well yesterday I installed a shift light and I went out to test it obviosly I had to get on the car a little because I set my shift light at 6,000 rpms. Well anyway after I was done, between shifts I started hearing some engine knock which progressively got louder as I drove home luckily I was only 5 mins from my house. I pulled over and I noticed a bunch of oil behind and below the alt. see pic: (found a random image of a 4.6 to help explain)

I checked the oil and it was bone dry, so I added in 3 qts of oil + stp oil treatment it quiet the knock down a lot but it's still there. I took it for a drive around the block and the oil pressure gauge dropped down to nothing so I stopped the car shut it off and when I turned it back on the oil pressure was back to normal?

Any ideas where to start?

These engines absolutely, positively must have their oil meticulously maintained at the "full" line.

The rate of oil return from the cylinder heads appears to be a problem which can lead to an emptying of the oil pan into the valve covers in short order at high RPM, leading to oil starvation at the pickup tube if the level was too low to start with.

If there was no oil on the stick, you've just taken it to 6K and now have a knock, I'd say the motor has probably spun a bearing.

I check my oil every fill up.
