While I was driving last night i noticed a strange loud tapping noise whenever i accelerated between 1800-2700 RPM. Then i go to check my oil and come to find that there is barely any oil in the engine. I just changed my oil last month and i don't dog my car out. I think this could have contributed to the noise but i was wonderin if anyone can tell me what this noise could be. I think my oil burns quicker than before because of my MAC LT's. Any help?

How much oil did you add? At 5 Quarts, my dipstick doesn't register any oil. At 6 Quarts it shows full. Are you running synthetic or syn-blend or dino oil? What did your oil pressure gauge register when it tapped?

I used Castrol Syntec 5 quarts. But when i found out my oil was low i put in 4 quarts of regular Penzoil oil and i put the dipstick back in and the dipstick showed that the oil level was over max. there are 53000 miles on my engine. The Oil pressure guage is always in the same position and i was wonderin if it was worth it to buy an aftermarket oil press gauge?

I would drain out all the oil and start over with a new filter. Does yours take 5 or 6 Quarts? Check your manual. My '04 takes 6 Quarts. Once you have a new "baseline," check the oil level weekly to see if it is consuming oil and if so, at what mileages. I'm assuming there are no oil leakes under the car. As to an aftermarket gauge, I would hold off until you have further diagnosed the problem. Get that over-fill out ASAP!

Also, stick with 5-20 or 10-30 weight for the "test."

Tapping was attributed to low oil level. Probably your lifters crying for lubrication. Don't believe any damage was done since you caught it quickly.

Maybe tapping now from over-fill situation causing airation of the oil. Change your oil and set new baseline!

The tapping should have went away pretty damn quickly after you filled it up with oil..Were you punching it when you were low on oil??

Tapping = a spark plug getting ready to blow out perhaps???

Also, isn't mixing synth and non-synth in the crank case a REAL BAD THING???

Mixing synth and non-synth is fine. Motorcraft 5-20 is a synth blend. I think the oil is airating due to the over-fill and should be drained out ASAP. Don't think it a plug. Let me know how it is after an oil re-fill.
