Engine Pinging

normally i dont drive it too hard, normally just like 3.5k is the highest it sees

today i romped it up to like 4.5-5k one or two times and i heard some pinging. for a second or two. i was able to duplicate it later on by going to like 3/4 throtle in diferent gears. not really loud, barley audible over the radio at normal level

is it possible i got some bad gas or something? i only use 87 octane. never noticed a problem before. i just got gas yesterday and the day before it poured rain and it was like 60* today it was like 40* outside. maybe condensation in the gas tank or something

might be a loose tranny mount too, sounded like it might be that also

gotta diablo tune? or anything of the sort? try running higher octane..., maybe you have bad gas in there...that's happened to me before...but i always run 93 'cause my ****'s blown lol

If you pay $1.50 more for the same 15 gallons, but you get midgrade, is it worth it?

Then again, 15 gallons of crap in your tank will hurt you.

How about just going with high test "93" all the time and stop worrying about a few coins, to save thousands in a new motor. The 4.6 will not tolerate pre-ignition.

A mustang specialty shop noticed pinging and detonation when my car was running 87. I bumped up to 91 octane, and it was still very noticable at low and high rpm.

Some of the stock tunes are horrible.

I got a dyno tune on 91 octane and it was all better, and has been 35k miles later.

i topped it off with 93, i did not notice it pinging when i drove it back.

oil color and level appeared normal

a little (very small amount) black residue on the exhaust tips, might just be from the exhaust condensing in the mornings though

If your timming adjust out to catch it then wouldn't worry about it to much probably just bad gas.
One thing to remember is these engines can expeirance valve bounce too, which sounds a bit like pinging.

I get valve bounce some times and I nail the ponies out at 5500 - 6000 rpm out of mine all the time and it has 34k on now and it still sounds and runs great.

You need higer octane i had the same problem and so did my buddy. It will fix the engine pinging thing. Its common with the mustangs...if you ask any salesmen or tech that knows about stangs at any ford dealership they will tell you that the mustangs are tuned for low octane...but then they will say if it pings then you need to run higher octane..

it probably needs a fuel filter sometime soon which might have also been a problem. i think it is supposed to be replaced every 15k

I ran my 03 gt on 87 for two tanks after I bought her(she had 5000 miles on it when I adopted her) Pinged like crazy. Put 91 in her....pretty much the same thing. Went to 93 and all was well. I guess she prefers the finer things in life. Just like a woman. I have the Diablo tune thing on it now so I am supposed to have to run 93 but I would not do 87 ever again anyway..... pingpingpingpingpingpingpingping.

I am still experiancing a similar problem... My car sounds like it is pinging (I think) but it only does it from 2.5-3K and then it goes away. It does it at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle for sure, at WOT I cant hear it over the exhaust. I tried 91 octane and it still does it. Also the noise is intermittent... See sig below for mods... Does this sound like pinging or something else?

Gentlemen, these cars are designed to run on 87. If there is pinging, you have diluted gasoline or excessive carbon in the engine. Simply stepping up to higher octane is only going to strain your 02 sensors and it's just a band-aid fix for the engine ping.

The cure is to clean up the TB and run Seafoam all 3 ways and these need to be added to the preventative maintenance list. The Seafoam may not work for everyone, but if you take a look at the 11-page thread at the top of this forum, you'll see that the majority are happy with Seafoam.
