I've got a 97 GT and the CEL is intermittently coming on. Oddly enough, it also sometimes turns off without me clearing the code.

Anyway, it comes back with code P1443. This is for the evaporative purge valve.

My question, is this a common problem or one that anyone has experienced before? I've got a whole list of things to start checking from the service manual, but if anyone has experince with this or it is a common problem, that could save me a good deal of time.

Thanks,
Brian

Easiest one relating to evap codes is replace the gas cap. You can also check for blockage or damage to any of the evap lines, but good luck finding that without knowing what to look for.

agree
first check your gas cap
then check your fuses...CJB(under dash) #2 and #8 if these are blown they you have a short somewhere
if they are ok then check the purge valve itself and current flow to it.
Purge Valve is underneath the right fender

check this and update us

easy to fix, 2 parts cause this problem. 1 is the cainster purge valve, part # E6ZZ-9C915-A and the thermistor probe part # F57Z-14A606-BA, both parts should run @$60.00 and this is a commomn problem on 1997 back Ford cars and lt trucks

Thanks for the info. I did see these part numbers after searching the forums, but I'm not excited about spending 60$ on a problem that has no effect on driveablity or milage or anything else I'd notice. I may test each sensor to see if one or another is bad, or even see if this part cross references to a 98+ mustang and get a used but good parts.

1998 up uses a different Evap system and different parts and yes, this will cause some loss of performance if not corrected
