Exhaust kit recommendations?

I'm looking to replace the factory (not even sure if it's the original one though) exhaust on my 65 coupe, since it's so full of leaks it's not even funny. I called NPD looking to maybe buy the Flowmaster kit they had, but you have to buy the hangers, piping and mufflers, H pipe and turndowns as separate sets. And the American Thunder system they offer has too large of piping and is made to work with LT headers. Anyone know of a full dual system with mufflers (preferrable flowmaster or magnaflow or somethig) for a decent price that will work with the factory manifolds (non K code) and can possibly exit under the rear valance, since it doesn't have the valance with the holes cut for the exhaust? Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

I think your best bet would be to go a good exhaust shop and have one made up. Just make sure they carry the mufflers you want. Then you know it'll fit your car and you won't have to worry about the small stuff.

Well the local exhaust shop I talked to wanted 700 to fab a system, on top of 200 to install it. I don't think I'd trust them to do it anyway, it didn't seem like they were necessarily on top of their game.

Is there another shop around you? That seems quite high for an exhaust. The last time I looked into a system it was going to cost me $300 and that was with Dynomax mufflers and mandrel bends for a 460.

I thought so too. It was some 19 year old kid I was talking too, so I'm pretty sure he had no idea what he was talking about. Which is why I wanted to find a pre-fabbed system, to eliminate having to have that done, and just have a shop install the hangers and mount the pipes.

Something you can do with the prefabbed set up is get the system designed for long tubes and have the shop make up a set of head pipes. But what would it hurt to look at a couple more shops?

I just went through (still going through) a whole bunch of crap with an exhaust shop and my friend's civic... they completely screwed him over and it was one I had recommended to him.

To fix it, we are probably going to try and fab up our own. Neither of us has a welder, but he has uncles that have them and I know some guys around here. We are just going to buy the parts from like summit or jegs and mock it up, cut everything, mark it, and then take it to someplace that has a welder and put it together. From what I've heard, you just have to take your time and you can do a good job on them. The problem with your's is I believe you are still wanting to go over the axle and out the back. That can be a little fun to fab up. I'm going to go with a side exhaust, and from the picture on mustangdepot.com of the spintech kit, I should be able to do it.

If you go to a shop, make sure you get everything in writing before work progresses, and I'd stick around and ask if you can watch. If you do it yourself, be prepared to spend a bit of time on it.

An easy out for the tail pipes would be to get a couple pre fabbed from Summit or Jegs. I think Jegs has a pair for around $100.

Damn man, my local shop did my entire system installed, including alllll parts (2.5" pipes, 2 40 flows, 1' chrome tailpipes) from the headers back for $400. And that's in the bay area...check around different shops...

Hey Csxfbird, if you live in S. California, I have a complete stainless dual exhaust set-up that ran from my stock manifolds. It has dual Magnaflows with the warranty certificate. I got LT headers and am adding Dr Gas and Magnapacks so I don't need my old set-up.

Also Mustang70, do you know of any good muffler shops in the San Diego area??

The one that was recommended to me by one of the guys on here was Dualtone in Pacific Beach. I never made it there to have any work done though as I got rear ended on my way there. Their numbers are 858-273-7964 and 619-276-4525. Drop me a PM as to where you are in San Diego.

My Magnaflow Magnapacks were 110 shipped, stainless slash cut tips 50 and 148 for the shop to install the mufflers/tips next week w/ 2.5" aluminized pipe.

This is a non-Mustang story, but I was going to replace the exhaust on one of my cars, and the local muffler shop charged less for all the parts installed than just the parts were going to cost me.

I don't even consider doing exhaust myself anymore.
