Exhaust leak...

What kinda noise does the car make if it has an exhaust leak. Also, how would the sound differentiate(sp?) while driving?

It's a ticking sound. You really hear it when driving next to a wall. You can also place a sheet a plywood on the side of the car and rev it up.

Hmph, so it wouldn't be really loud then? Cause this tick I can hear while driving down the road and its really noticable.

most people say it sounds like a sprinkler. (pfft pfft pfft) it should be rhythmic.when i had an exhaust leak you can REALLY hear it putting a load on the engine (like driving uphill in a high gear) with the windows up.

So its pretty damn loud then? Like embarrasing to drive around in public loud? lol

Oh I forgot, when the mechanic dropped the tranny and stuff because he thought the ticking may be in there, he had to take off the X pipe. When he put it all back together it was still tapping, so if it were an exhaust leak wouldn't puttng it back on and tightening everything fixed that?

its probably the x pipe where it bolts to the manifolds , if you dont take out the factory studs and put regular studs in , they will leak everytime ....IMO.... lots of experience with this before I put long tubes on , best mod beside supercharger I have done by the way.....

Would it make a loud ass ticking that sounds like a lifter or something? How much are these regular studs and where can I get them?

its not embarrasing to drive around, its jsut annoying to the driver. Maybe another driver can hear it, doubt it though.

i think i have the same exhaust leaking sound, but everyone adds mid pipes are all you guys changing the studs?

i have the stock studs and will be willing to try the stud kit to stop the noise.

a while back i got a number for a stud kit, but people were associating it with magnaflows x pipe, would it be the same for all mid pipes? heres the #

napa#600-1819

where can me and the other guys get this if its correct? all i got was the #, not the place.

i got the stud kit for the driver side. thats how i got rid of the leak
like the part number says: you get it from NAPA

I have changed my manifold bolts amd a lot of people do .Also was the passenger side gasket in good shape ?

oh yeah dont use the paper looking gasket they gave you. Just use the ford one if its still good. If you use the paper one the gasket will eventually break.

i went through that this weekend. needless to say it pissed off my neighbors. LOL
got it fixed though, the driver side tubing was out of alignment slightly and not tight enuff. *damn mac for including no instructions*. basically what gave it away was it was too loud sound and the sound was unbalanced.

NAPA parts # 800-1916 [it may be 600-1916.. can't remember] Its a set of studs with a TON less spacing between bothe threaded ends.. it'll make sense when you see it. They're 10 bucks or less and will fix you up well.

Basically it will sound like a loud tip-tip-tip and it'll be pretty rythmic. If you car is loud all around it, instead of only near the exhaust tips, you've def got an exhaust leak. Alos, get under the car with a flashlight and look for carbon buildups on the engine block or tranny. They'l looks like gritty dark partches that will look out of place on the car.

To me it really sounds like you have a leak. Use the studs, and re-align everything yourself, and you should be good!

Thanks bud. See it actually sounds like its coming from the engine if you were to open the hood, but if u look underneath the car it also sounds like its coming from under there. I took it to a mechanic at ford and he actually thought the ticking was coming from the tranny so he tore it apart and stuff and put it back together and it still ticks. which leaves me to wonder if it could possibly be an exhaust leak since its so close by. Now what do these studs go to? The header gasket? If so isn't that a pretty long job?

turns out we all have the wrong part #'s for NAPA. does anyone know the correct one.

i dont want to mess up my car because of an exhaust leak.
