Has anyone tried to replace a cracked right manifold? I just left the mechanic... the quote is $500+ to replace the right manifold, gasket, and labor. Is this something I should be able to do on my own?
Not exactly as you may have to remove engine parts that may be in the way to gain access. You may also require a air ratchet to remove and replace the manifold bolts.
But you can always do something yourself, but me...I'd just get someone else to do it. Especially if you don't have all the necessary tools.
And if you install it incorrectly, you gonna have a exhaust leak and you will smell everytime you get out of your car.
Puting the headers on my V6 was a pain in the butt. I can't remember which side it was but I needed a special crows foot socket. A 1 1/16th I believe. If you have a hole afternoon to kill then you can do it.
If he has a cracked manifold I'd be he is smelling it right now as is =)
I just had my passenger side manifold crack. I have done almost no work on cars, but I went out and bought a socket set and was able to take it apart very easily. Got it welded back together and running again with no problems. It takes a bit of time, but its deffinatly not hard. I thought it was worth it to do it myself, although if anything had gone wrong I am sure I would have a different opinion
My passenger side manifold cracked over the summer. Took about 50 minutes to get out, i just welded it back together and reinstalled. Entire job was just under 2 hours for me, but I have a full set of tools and air tools and was also a mechanic for many years. The egr tube can be a P.I.T.A. and the manifold bolts come off easiest with an air ratchet. 500 isn't unreasonable.
do it yourself...and save your money...if you dont have the tools take that money u would spend getting it done and by some tools and maybe a mustang book to see about doing other types of jobs...so if u need tools for something else at least you have a start
