hey guys, this is my first 4.6L GT. i used to have a 96 cobra and an 89 GT vert. my cobra was quiet with stock exhaust and same with my GT. when i jump into this 01 GT of mine, the stock exhaust is much more noticeable. it could almost pass for flowmaster. i take it most of the stock ford exhausts are like this on the stangs now? i looked under the car and it says ford motor company on the muffler. i was not able to check the midpipe to see what it was but i am assuming it is stock too.
i plan on upgrading my exhaust for a much better sound but this is just crazy hearing my stock exhaust sound like this. any notes guys?

Here's my note...Exhaust should be the first mod on any Mustang :D
I suggest you go to mustangexhaust.com and listen to the clips and then decide on which setup you prefer *cough* BASSANI *cough* :nice:

Yeah, I kinda like how my stock exhaust sounds too. This is the 3rd stang that I've owned and it by far has the best sounding stock exhaust. It is a 2002 by the way. However, every time I hear someone else with aftermarket exhaust it makes me want to get a new setup!

Yeah the stock setup is very nice. I wish i would have kept the stock mufflers before i put on the o/r prochamber, but i switched em out with dynomax before hand... As much as i loved the way it sounded before its a huge improvement.

I found that the stock setup only sounded beasty at certain rpms, at a higher rpm it sounded VERY restrictive, whereas the new setup just keeps sounding meaner and meaner the higher you rev it... and i dont get to rev it above 3000 very much as its pretty damn loud... louder than any other prochamber setups i've heard, it doesn't show it on camera though, its very quiet on camera, but its because its a very deep sound.

Im sure you've looked over the forums enough to know that:
X=nascar, raspy, exotic
H=Muscle car
Prochamber=combination of both, unique and deep sounding, quieter
O/R midpipe = MUCH louder more raspy and dirty sounding.

And everybody and their dog has flowmaster mufflers.

I have to disagree about a stock GT having a louder exhaust note than a stock Cobra. I have owned both and when my 96 GT was stock, it was so quiet you could barely tell it had a v8 under the hood. But when i purchased my 97 Cobra, the stock exhaust note sounded so good that I was considering keeping it stock, although I did change it later on. Same goes for the 03 Mach I now own. GT mustangs also have 2 extra resonators on the stock midpipe that DOHC mustangs dont have. As far as aftermarket exhaust, I have had Bassani x pipes, both catted & off road, and neither sounded as good as the MRT catted h pipe I just installed on the Mach 1. The x pipes sounded ok but were too raspy for my taste, especially the off road one I had on the Cobra. Thats why I went with an h pipe this time around. It just sounds deeper & throatier, and thats with the stock catback on it. As far as mufflers go, I prefer magnaflow. Although Flowmasters sound bad-ss on stangs, I couldnt stand all the interior drone it caused. This is just my 2 cents.

with my stock exhaust on my cobra, i could not hear anything!
a few things have changed lately. i might be trading in my stang for an 03 escalade with a true dual exhaust on it. i need the room for my family. if it does not go through over the next couple days, ill probably try again in the summer.

i have always loved flowmaster and spintech mufflers on the old 5.0's. i had spintechs dumped on my 89 GT. it sounded so mean with an H-pipe!

IMO stay away from the BBK "X" pipe unless you like this goofy growling kind of sound in the mid range, it also happens to be at the exact rpms that I run on the highway. It made a power difference, it just sounds crappy in my opinion. The Dukes of Hazard might like it though.
