i have a 94 5.0 with 65k miles and it is stock except for a bassani x-pipe and bassani catback. the x-pipe i bought new with convertors about two years ago as well as the catback and i recently have been getting some strong exhaust fumes lately when i sit idling for a few minutes at a stoplight or pretty much anywhere i stop with the windows down. i don't see any smoke and it has been about 30k miles since i have tuned it up last also i'm getting the surging idle lately. any ideas?

how long has it been installed i had mine on for awhile and with it lowered i was constantly scrapping and rubbing stuff so much that it loosened the bolts slightly at the x and cat back and i got fumes there i would check to see if it is tightened up

thanks for the replys, it doesn't smell like rotten eggs just alot like unburned fuel. i thought there had to be a check engine light on before codes could be pulled?

Does this happen with the air vents on or off. Or does it not matter. If it smells only when the vents are on it could be a header gasket (that would make a tapping type noise under the hood), or it could also be an egr gasket or the egr line going to the header.

tossing another possiblity following go-stang's thinking, there is also a rubber hose that connects to the back of the intake and runs to a cylinder thing in the bay then down into the passenger fender. That connects to the charcoal canister. That takes the gas vapors in the tank, filters through the canister, then lets them into the engine. might be a hose on that routing.
