Looking to by aftermarket exhaust kit for the '98 gt conv. I've heard a lot of complaints about drone or droning. I was hoping someone could describe what it sounds like or what is is exactly. Also, will Flowmaster's 40 and 50 series delta flow drone? Which one is the better of the 2 considering i drive a drop top?

a harmonic anomoly that produces annoying vibrations in the cabin. sort of like too heavy bass notes. Free flowing exhuasts accentuate this anomoly at varying degrees that which usually occur at around 2000 RPM. If you listen, the stock exhaust does a good job of eleviating the sound, but its still there.

My flowmasters drone at 2000RPM just like everyone elses, but I happen to love the sound. I'll drive around at 2000RPM just to hear it :)

My advice, go for a ride in someones dronemaster-equipped car and see if you like it or not.

Wow Pedro I'm a lil late posting here but I have a MAC off road H-pipe and 40 series on the 94 now, and it sounds the best.

Whatever you do just keep the tailpipes man, and if you're ever over here in Clearwater let me know and you can take the 94 out for a spin and decide if you like it.

If Flowmasters are too much for you I'd suggest Dynomax.

If you want to experience drone, do this.

Plug you ears with your fingers, and hum. It's a pressure wave that you feel. Hum low though. If you hum higher, you won't drone. ;)

That's a good way to describe it. I never would have thought of that:nice:

The new flowmasters are not that bad. With my windows up, i can barely hear the drone. And if i have the radio on it muffs it out. I find that in the winter time, if i want to hear my drone, i need to crack a window halfway down and lower the radio.

In the summer time with both windows down, i can hear the drone well, but like i said, i love it!

One theroy is that the drone is actually the tail pipes resonating like a pipe on a pipe organ. 'Graham' on the Corral Forums site did some research. It just so happens the primary sound the engine makes at 1800-2000 rpm is just the right frequency to get the tail pipes resonating. This happens becaues the tail pipes are just the right length to vibrate at that sound frequency. If you change the length of the pipes you still get the drone but it happens at a higher or lower frequency depending on wether you shorten or lengthen the pipes.

One fix (I did it and it works) is to install side branch resonators. Go to the Corral site and search for "exhaust drone is fixed" or the author "graham" :nice:

Example Drone with Packs and Prochamber:
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
That is at an 8 on a loudness scale of 1-10.
