Explorer rearends.......are they 31 or 28 splines?

I have my eye on a 1992 Explorer to use as a bracket racer.

Yea I know its insane.....its heavy, its huge all that bs. But I want something different, and the price is right.

I just need to know are the rear differentials in Explorers all the same? are some 28 and some 31 spline? Are all explorers 31 spline. Please advise!

The 5.0/4.6 explorers had 31 spline count for sure. I also believe that the 4.0 explorers had 31 spline but not 100% sure though due to the fact that the 1990 and up ranger 4.0's had 28 even though they came with an 8.8" rear

Fairly sure though all come with the 31 count, just double check though.

thanks for your response. I was thinking the same, but you never know I guess I'll pull an axle and count. lol
