I just failed inspection because of high emissons. The guy told me it failed because of a high NOX reading. It is supposed to read 907 and mine read 1259.The guy told me NOX has somthing to do with the temp of the gas in my exhaust and he want $120 just to try and diagnose what the problem is.After paying him $70 for the inspection I told him forget it i'll figure it out myself somehow.Anyone have any ideas at what the problem might be..I have new o2 sensors and a new exhaust from the headers all the way back so it cant be any of that stuff and I have no checkeng light on either.I also just put in a computer from a 5spd because I just did the swap so I dont know if that matters at all.I have no idea where to start so please help......

The computer seems to be the most obvious culprit, but I wouldn't draw a final conclusion on that just yet. I will ask some of my buddies about your NOX problem to see if I can dig anything up. Assume that you are running an automatic stil. If someone else in the forum knows the immediate answer I am sure they will type up.

Just curious about a few things and neither of them necessarily has anything to do with why you failed. Just thinking out loud about it. I live in NJ with a 95 as well and a very similar setup. The only difference is that I have always had a 5-speed and associated computer (I am not sure that they are that much different, but I cannot state that I know this for sure).

I have to go through inspection this month. My sticker is 7 - 2005 so I only have about a week left. I need to fix an exhaust leak before I bother to go.

1 - Is your timing advanced. If so, how far?
2 - What grade fuel are you using. Premium, regular etc?
3 - When is the last time, if ever, that you ran fuel injector cleaning agents through the system?
4 - How does your air cleaner look. Fairly new, dirty?
5 - When, if ever, did you change your fuel filter?
6 - Did you modify your injectors or are they still bone stock?

Again... Just thinking out loud. None of this maybe the reason you failed.

My timing is not advanced still at the stock setting but I havent checked it in a couple of years.I have never ran injector cleaner through my stock injectors but I will tomorrow. The air cleaner is clean,i'm running a cold air setup so the filter is in the fender. The reason I have a 5spd computer is because I swaped from a aode to a 5spd.I have been reading my Haynes manual and it look's like my problem is going to have something to do with the egr valve or something related to it. Oh yea.....my fuel filter is new and I have been running ultra 94.

EGR valve or bad cats...

I vote EGR. Mine was bad and I did a 697 (of 700) here in CT so I barely passed.

Also the air injection for the cats teys to help cut back on the NOx emissions. My cats were basically new.

70 bucks for an inspection? Damn its 29 here in MA.

Anyway, as I understand it, if you're at stock timing and you're running 94 fuel (god knows why with the price and lack of power gain) then doesnt that make your engine burn the fuel less efficienty? Could that be the cause of crappy emissions?

I figure if the fuel is not getting burnt up as it should, then there will be lots of un-burnt particulates in the exhaust gas, thus causing crappy emissions.

Remember that the octane rating of a gasoline is NOT the amount of energy in that gasoline. It is a measure of that gasoline's sensitivity to knock. A 94 octane gasoline can withstand more compression then an 87 octane gasoline before it prematurely detonates (pings) due to compression.

Since you haven't modified your timing or compression ratio, using a higher octane gasoline will, if anything, decrease the performance of your car. Switch back to 87. You'll use the fuel more efficiently, go faster, and save a ton of money.

First problem, stop running premium gas, run 87.

Check to see if your EGR is functioning. Haynes manual will tell you how.

High NOx can also be from running lean. If your EGR is 100% fine, I would try replacing your oxygen sensors. They are the primary control of a/f ratio and will drastically effect your emissions output if you are not running right at 14.64 a/f ratio.

Start with the basics first. check your plugs, wires, cap, rotor. make sure you are running the right heat range for the plugs.

cleaning your egr passages will also reduce NOx. what kind of test is it?

Not trying to be an ass, I live in MI so we don't have emissions, also I'm not exactly sure how they measure emissions, but could you possibly overdrive the AIR pump to try to get a cleaner reading?

Also if you had some sort of tuning solution could you change the idle to much lower to avoid an unacceptable reading? Could be another excuse to buy a tweecer or something of the sort.

Thanks for all the replies guy's.........I'm pretty convinced it has to be the EGR valve.I'm gonna take it off tomorrow and check to see if it's working. My cat's,sparkplug's,cap&rotor& my o2's are all brand new so it shouldnt be any of them.I usually run 89 octane gas I put the 94 in because I thought it might help with the inspection, guess not.The EGR valve is on the pass side down by the header right?

This should help.

Right behind the T/B on the upper intake pass side. Soak that big nut down with some Liquid Wrench to help it break loose.

i will never understand you guys saying to run cheap gas is better. If I put cheap gas in my car it runs like ****.

I'm glad you not one of those guys that said i failed emissions and then says you removed all the emissions stuff.

My car passes fine here in PA and thats with the "hollowed out" cats. We'll see how much it changes with the new TB next time i take it

Wait a second...the guy said you failed then he wants $120 to diagnose the problem. Sounds like a scam to me.

I dont trust any of those mofos. Try going to another inspection place and see how you do.

If your getting a legit inspection why pay for it instead of taking it to a state center for free? I've taken cars though that passed emissions but failed for crap like too much play in the steering wheel. Then when I know was wrong, and I didn't have to pay for it I take to to a garage since they don't check much more then emissions.

Bump the timing back to around 10* which is factory or so...I think 8* is factory, but I had the same probelm and I bumped the timing back and fixed everything!
