I have a 94 GT convert with an AODE. Right now I'm at 143k and occasionally the tranny likes to drop out of overdrive and back into 3rd when I'm on the highway. A few people suggested the "speed sensor" and the " gear selector". I want to start with changing out the speed sensor. Does anyone know where to look? Has anyone had this problem before? I'd like to avoid a new tranny until I get a new motor in 4 years. Any help would be great!!

Roger, I think you should type up a description of this, what happens, and how to fix, and have Joe put in it the FAQ sticky.

This is a recurring post on the boards.

tccoa has some awesome info on it. Love the search function. It looks easy enough to replace. 2 bolts and a plug. I'm gonna try it and see what happens.

well rob, what i did to fix the problem was to take out that mess of an aode, and put a t5 in there.....

mine ended up being a combination of a bad torque converter, a bad mlps, and a good amount of burned clutch packs. at that point, it was either another full rebuild, or a replace with the manual. i opted for the t5. if all the car is doing is downshifting from O/D though (without any slipping or funny smells), my guess would be that only the MLPS is bad which is a very common thing on both mustangs and thunderbirds. as abusedstang said, tccoa has all the information anyone could ever need about the subject. (it was actually where i got all my info when i was searching for the root of my problem). when i would get on the highway and get over 50 or so, anything over 1/4 throttle would drop the car out of O/D. it qouls thwn proceed to rev freely, upshift, downshift, upshift, downshift, all right in a row. once i got it to about 70, it was ok as far as the slipping out of overdrive went. hope this helps, since i am going back about 2 or so years ago.

Thanks Rog.

My car "has" done this before, but not with regular frequency. Since I already have the PI Stallion, cooler and shift kit, Ill only need the rebuild ( already did research, and found out it should be about $1200 for everything) if the time arises.

I'm having this problem right now also....my car is just dying all over the place, it's so sad 1200 is a little steep it seems. There's a place out here in Phoenix that sells rebuilds for 800 + 75 core. There's a place on e-bay that has a performance aode w/ the 4r70w gears in it for something like 1000-1100 shipped.

yep, i just started getting the overdrive problems... i already rebuilt this beast (including converter and solenoids)at 70k when i bought it and now at 96k this b.s. arose and im starting to hit neutral instead of 2nd gear now at 1/2- w.o.t. so im thinkin t-5 if my buddy(a dealer) can find me a car to rip the trans out of. im so sick of always keeping an eye/ ear out for the next thing that could be going wrong. plus it makes me so weary to wind it out thinking its just gonna hit the rev limiter instead of the next gear 1200 into this trans and i will not invest another grand or so unless im rowing throw my own gears

i hate that feeling, i love the 2nd gear downshift but more than half the time i hit the rev limiter and it falls on its face...I need a chip.

you wont regret the swap. it was by far the best thing i ever did to the car. as far as the aode goes, my tranny was completely rebuilt by ford to the tune of $1800 (paid for under warranty by the dealer i bought the car from since it started dying on me a week after i bought the car). this rebuild basically replaced everything but the case. 3 weeks later and it started slipping again. i said to hell with it and did the swap. i recommend you at least consider doing the same before you shell out about a grand for a rebuild.

This is it here, it's under the drivers side. I'ts held on by 2 bolts where you see the small holes on the bottom left and bottom right. Really easy to replace, takes about 5 minutes.

I would try that first, they are pretty cheap from autozone/oreillys. In my case it didn't help. I ended up swapping to a 4r70w from a '02 V6, came out a whole lot cheaper than rebuilding.

you can find many parts in the classifieds as well as mustang salvage places like stangparts.com. in fact, i have a few stock parts i would part with if you were willing to pay shipping.....these are:

stock shifter
stock shift know
3 stock flywheels
stock flywheel bolts

im sure there is more, but i havewnt had time to go out in the garage and see what is there.....

Here's a bit of a update om my auto problems...

Had that problem for over 2 years was getting bad this summer..

So I decided to try this out (MLPS sensor),

Well I got as far as locating mine and notice some rust on it so I unbolted the screws and re align the old one and got a rag and dip it in oil and apply it onto the sensor part hole..

IT'S Been 4 days and my tranny never downshifts and goes into nuetral for a few seconds anymore...

WORKS Execellent... tranny good as new once more...

PLUS I DIDN'T REPLACE IT JUST AJUSTED IT and oil it up !

Was going to autozone and get a new sensor but so far not needed.
