hey guys i have finally have some pics of my car for all to see. these pics are of the car at the body shop after they painted it. it still needs to be wet-sanded and buffed and then reassembled but it it's finally starting to look a classic stang. i've had the car for over 20 years and this is the first time it will not be primered in the entire time i've owned it. i will get more pics once they are done with the reassembly phase. i will still have to put all the chrome. lights, bumpers etc back on once the car comes home. just so y'all know the car will be getting a new black vinyl top around income tax time, so that's the reason for the roof not being completely painted since it was about 200 bucks cheaper for them not to paint the whole thing. well enough talking, time for some pics. what do y'all think?

Nice to see your progress Bryan. I always get pangs of envy when I see anyone making progress on a project since mine is going so slowly (or not at all really right now), but especially so with fellow '69-'70 owners. Keep it up and post more pics when it gets buffed out.

My inspiration!!!

I have been in primer only 7 years, so I guess I have 13 years to go!

Is this a real GT? I was thinking of making my fastback a clone GT because I love the graphics so much.

thanks guys, it is really exciting to see the car this far along. this is the first paint job it's had since i've owned it, so it really is getting farther along than it has ever been before.

Max, yes the car is a real GT. one of a little over 5,000 maed in 69 and the coupe was the rarest, beleive it or not there were a lot more verts than coupes and there about 3 times as many fastbacks as coupes. if you reaaly want to make a clone you'll need the GT gas cap, which for 69 had a gear tooth pattern around the center of it and was a one year only item. anyway thanks for all the thumbs up guys

i actually have 2 at the moment, i'm not sure which i'm going to use just yet though. the original one has a small dent next to the T, and the other one's chrome isn't quite as nice as the original's. whenever i decide which one i'm gonna use i'd be happy to sell you the other one, but beware i paid almost 250 bucks for the spare, so i would have to be able to make my money back.

69fb00gt, thanks i appreciate it. i know have a lot more respect for the trailer queens with 20,000 dollar paint jobs now, that's for sure. mine will end up being about 3500 bucks and it's a very nice paint job. one of my favorite things about it is the blackout job they did, it's a base/clear but the clear is flat so hopefully the black won't oxidize as bad as the normal flat black does, the guy even thinks i will be able to wax it, but he's not 100% sure yet, he's still researching it to see what he can find out.

It is always nice to see a project moving forward. Hard to believe some of these cars are now over 40 years old and people are still enjoying them in so many different ways.

nice colour, and nice to see progress.

How do you go about sanding the matt black on the hood? Do you sand it or try to work around it?

EDIT: I'm having feelings of nostalgia looking at that colour. When I was a kid I had a toy luger of the same colour.

they taped off the black parts to sand and buff.

Considering the PO of my car did the same thing when he had my car painted and considering the RUST and small hole under where the vinyl top use to be I would reconsider the $200 and the protection the paint gives you under that new vinyl top just my .02 cents.

i'm not worried about that, it has about 3 coats of dp90, then a couple coats of filler primer, then another couple coats of dp90. one of the main reasons i decided to go with another vinyl top, beside the fact i like the look, was because there was a bunch of rust damage under the original vinyl top that would have cost me another grand to "fix it right" right now it has metal jb-welded in and under the holes provided by the rust. i did all that years ago and haven't had a leak or rust bubble since but it would take a lot of work to smooth it out enough to lay paint down on top of it, including undoing what i have already done and replacing all of it with welded in metal and a lot more filler work to make it look right. since the work i did is holding up fine i didn't feel the need to undo it and paint the top instead of doing the vinyl top

thank you sir, i am very proud of it. with the shelby vert side scoops and the factory hood scoop and pins i think it will look very different than most any other 69 coupe around. eventually i will add the shelby vert decklid and end caps to complete the look, but it just wasn't in the budget this time around. luckily the color is easy enough to redo since it is a factory color (acapulco blue) and everyone has a code for it, but the body shop that is doing the work can computer scan the color to make sure it is perfect. i don't think i'll have to worry about it though, sice he uses sherwin williams paint almost exclusively.
