Fire!!!

I was wondering, how can I get fire to come out my exhaust?
I have seen it on very few cars where they push a button and the exhaust burns up- all I know is that it involves spark plugs
any help? has anyone done this?
does it sound ricey?

HA! It's some kind of ghetto-type language that's used here. "Teh win" translated is The Win, like The Winner. It's stupid, but when used at the right times, it can be hilarious! And there's a lot more where that came from. Hang around here too long, & you probably find out a lot more about the weird things in life that you ever expected to know.

All I know about this mod is that it involves spark plugs and a switch. I remember my dad talking about kids doing that to their cars back when he was a teenager, but you don't see it much nowdays. I wouldn't consider it to be rice. I actually think it'd be kinda cool to have flames coming out of a Stangs tailpipes.

I've actually just seen a kit for this, but cant remember where. Involved drilling small hole in your tailpipe and attaching an ignitor and fuel supply. I want to say it was propane but i can't remember.

OK Ive done this to my 63 Merc, my cousins 65 El Camino, buddies 57 Plymouth... Back in the day the way it was done could cause some problems. Now a days you buy a control box, a coil (2 for dual exhaust),and spark plug or 2. It doesnt work with cats, as they will not let raw fuel out the pipes.
Its wired so you rev the motor, press the button, and this control box cuts power to the engines coil and sends it to the coil or 2 you have set up for the flamethrowers. You drill a hole in your exhaust 8-12" from the tips and weld in a bung and screw in the plugs. So your engine doesnt get spark so the raw air/fuel go's through the exhaust and the plugs by the tips ignites and you have flamethrowers. Its pretty cool while driving cuz you can do a longer burn than when you are stopped and in nuetral. My cousin built an exhaust tip on his el camino to shoot the flames up at like a 45 degree angle. My 63 Merc had turndowns so it would blast the road and the fire would kinda roll behind the car. Never hurt anything. Was kind of a fun novelty thing for car shows and cruises.

Oh man...flames is ol' school. Not really ricer, and if so, they took it from ol' school hot rodding. If you're gonna do it, get a kit like mentioned above....unless you know what you're doing. Like said already...basically cutting the spark to some of the cylinders to get the raw fuel to shoot out the exhaust, where you ignite it near the end with a spark plug.

Perfect for those times where kids leave a bike behind your car, just fry it!

Dunno how you would wire it up on a new Mustang. Maybe a wire off computer that sends spark to all the coils? Dont think yuou could splice it into all 8 coil packs. Also what would the computer think when it happenned?

I'll do it if it can be easily on our rides.

What is a bung- I am assuming it is a big nut- right?

Also- I have a basic understanding of electricity- what would happen if I just hook up a wire- through a switch to the sparkplug on the tail pipe?

Race cars have flames due to valve overlap causing unburnt air/fuel to pass through the non-catted hot exhaust that has burning carbon deposits igniting the unburnt air fuel mixture causign flames to roll out of the exhaust.

My buddy had that done to his 39? Chevy Pickup aptly named Inferno. He would rev it up, flip a switch and it would cut the ingition to the engine and to the tail pipes. The gas would come screamin out and burn! It was pretty sweet. I think a set-up like that would be harder for a FI car. I do remember a thread about this a while ago. Do a search on it.

The coil gives the spark plug the voltage to ignite the air/fuel. I just always used the cheap $15 ones. All the kits cut power to the engine, its how you get the unburnt air/fuel through the exhaust. The only other way is to build a race motor. The bung is like a big nut, usually the kits come with the "bung" it may be tapered or shaped differently than just a big nut.
The switch to the plug probably wont work... without cutting engine power you wont get the fuel, just exhaust. You wont be able to ignite that, unless you run reeeeeeaaaaal rich. And thats no good. And just 12 volts to the spark plug wont ignite the air/fuel mixture. You could make your own controller that will cut power to the engine and send it to the other coil's. Wire up a button, and use a big nut for the spark plug in the exhaust.

My brother had this on his '67 F100. let off the gas, pump the choke (who here knows what that is? ) a couple times, hit the gas and wait a second and flip the switch. Time it just right and you're rewarded with a LOUD BOOM and big fire balls shooting out the back of the truck.

His was done real old school with the help of our Uncle. Used a pair of Model T Coils and a pair of spark plugs (this is back in '85). Would work better with todays aftermarket coils. Usign propane is cheating to me. My brother has put together the parts to rig up a modern version the would fire a pair of fuel injectors inthe tail pipes and then the spark plugs would fire and set it off. Put he hasn't tested it or even installe dit on anything yet. Maybe we'll try it on the street rod I want to build.
