ok, i've owned several aod mustangs but this is my first t-5.

it's a 92 vert, just got it, not positive if it's an original 5 speed car, is there a way to check by looking at the title? or vin?

tonight i was trolling around the block getting my fix and I knowtised a few things.

Keep in mind, I've been adjusting the clutch cable,

1. It did'nt want to shift as well as when I brought it home, it would grind a little, but I really gotta push the clutch in hard.

2. when I got it back the car smelt like burnt trans fluid and the cabin had smoke in it. I've let the car sit and run in the drive way for a good chunk of time with no smoke till now.

3. the car starts without the clutch pedal pushed in.

4. I un adjusted the clutch and it seemed better...

thoughts?

I"ve never adjusted a clutch nor owned a t-5 car so I'm in the dark...

This, to me, sounds like the clutch isn't disengaging all the way. Like it's still grabbing and causing the input shaft to still be spinning. Maybe do the clutch adjustment to see if that helps? IIRC, you pull the clutch pedal TOWARD you and you can hear it click or something and that's supposed to tighten up on the clutch cable.

And is the grinding associated with ALL gears or just one? If it's just one gear, it's probably a syncro, if it's all, it may be the clutch not being adjusted right. Oh and just in case you didn't know this, T5's do not have a reverse syncronizer so you can hit 5th and then go down into R to stop any grinding there.

It was a couple gears, I think it was the clutch cable. I re spun the adjuster on the firewall and it seemed better,

Think the smoke was the clutch?

Thing I forgot to add, when I would leave it in gear but have the clutch in, it would sound like the tranny was spinning..

My main concern was the smoke

To tell if it was originally a 5-speed car, look at your trim tag on the door jam, the last box on the bottom right will be labeled TR, if the first digit is "2" then it was originally a T5, if it is a "T" then it came with an AOD.

Alrighty, found a local mustang guy who was nice and stopped by and looked at her for me. Turns out the clutch is just fine, It's just a matter of me getting used to the dang thing. He let me check out his stock clutch to feel the difference in weight, man... mine is heavy, but the points all engaged the same, it goes though all the gears great. My smoke was exhuast from a leak, gotta get that figured next... fun..... thanks for your guys help!
