First oil change

Man, I was trying to get the filter off the car yesterday, absolutely could not budge it by hand. So I get out my middle-sized strap wrench and try it, and it starts biting into the filter. So I move it to a different spot and try again, same thing, so I move it to a ridge where it shouldn't bite into it, and I put so much torque on it the strap broke. Unreal. So I get out the big strap wrench and start hanging my body weight on the thing, and it finally comes loose. Why would the factory put the filter on so damned tight - holy hell.

I couldn't believe I snapped the freaking strap wrench!!!

:nonono:

was this a rubber type strap wrench? I just did my first oil change yesterday and used a traditional type metal strap wrench, (red handle large) (black handle small) mine was tight but not abnormal for a new car

rubber type strap wrenches are not the best for something that tight, does wrench have a warrenty?

my car took about 6 and a 1/4 quarts of Motorcraft 5w20 syn blend oil, next change will be full syn Mobil 1

I have Eibach pro-kit I used my home made 4x4 wood ramps with a 1x4 on top, turned out to be perfect for my average size body to slide all the way to middle of car (just to check things out)

Yeah, the rubber type (Craftsman), it's perfect for an oil filter. I went to Sears hardware and they replaced it no question.

I won't have that problem again - it's hand tight now - no need for any tighter.

6 1/4 qts.? I put in 5 qts. and the dipstick showed it was fine.

Yes, for sure it took all 6qts and a little of another, did you let the oil drain for more then 15 min

(I have always let mine sit draining while I do something else, this time it drained for at least 20 min.)

The six + quarts info came from one of the forums not sure where.

and i just checked the owners manual on page 227 says 6.0 quarts (5.7 liters)

I would check that dipstick one more time on level ground with good light

tips on checking oil,
-don't check it right after you turn engine off, let it sit for a few minutes to let oil in the top of engine time to drain back to pan (I try to check mine when car is cold before a drive)

-hold the dipstick horizontal as quickly as you can (5w20 is thin and will run and give a false reading)

I just did my first change at 730mi. I had no problems getting my filter off however, I have a lift so I am able to get good leverage. She took a full 6qts.

Will do, for sure. I let it drain for about half an hour when I changed it on Sunday. It hasn't ran since Saturday night anyway, so I'll check it when I get home tonight - should be good and cold after sitting for 3 days. :D

good question,

I am not aware of an oil change light on the '05's but there could be (I don't remember mentioned in manual) ANYONE?

some cars have a dash computer that can reset it (check your manual) and some like late model Vettes and imports may need a tech to reset manualy or with a programer

i know there is no oil light for 3000 miles, but the owners manual says 5000 between oil changes is ok. when you start your car, all lights come on, and there are no oil change lights. i dont think that there is one at all. dont worry about it.

sorry for not being clear on my post, in my friends Lincoln LS 2001 it has a screen next to te gagues it tells him how many miles left till his next oil change is due, does the mustang have the same thing and if so how would you reset that would you be able to do it youself, or like i said above would the dealer have to reset the counter.
