First time starting up!!

ok guy I just put everything Back into the car. Yea I am so happie I got this thing back together Hopefully its runs with no problems which i dought.:(

But my question is what should i do before hand? I just got the motor in and nothing has been done to it its been sitting in my garage for atleast 1 year.
Anything I sould do or check before I try to start her up?
(fyi) I had a stock rebuild on her.
 
do you know how to break in a cam properly? and with which oil and which additives for break in?
if you're not sure , contact your cam company.
The first 15 min of a motors life are the most important, and if you dont break in the cam properly, you'll have to start over and install a new cam and lifters.
 
ok well this cam everyone would know its what i upgraded long time ago

its a little bigger then the stock on but it sould work good with the set up i have.

is there any other ways of primeing the engine?:shrug:
 
removing the distributer and using a priming tool with a hand drill is the only way I know to prime an engine.

If you go to start a fresh engine without priming the system, there will be no oil for a few seconds where its needed, and you can hurt vital components.

Using an oil pump primer in the distributor shaft on a 351w, which way should the drill rotate to prime the engine.... clockwise or counter-clockwise? Or does rotation direction not matter?

Counter clock wise and it does matter. The drill motor must be run backwards which is really hard on them.

I have removed all the spark plugs (leave the distributor in but unhook the positive wire going to it and plug the fuel line) and charged the battery and left the charger on it and let the starter motor crank it over to build pressure. You can sit and watch the oil pressure gage build as you crank the car. Don't turn the starter motor longer than a minute otherwise it will get very hot. This puts zero pressure on all parts and allows the oil to flow into all bearings and pumps up the lifters. If you assembled the engine with assemble lube or lots of oil recently this will work. If you put the engine together with oil a long time ago you should prime it like they mentioned in the above posts. Good Luck!
 
I'm sure this has been covered elsewhere before, but seems relevant for this thread as well.....what about proper oil for initial engine break in?
I've heard people say not to use synthetic, to drain it after the first few minutes of operation, etc.
Any opinions out there? I hope to be cranking mine soon too.

With an AC drill motor or even a DC for that matter, it doesn't matter which way it turns, the output is the same there is no forward or reverse when it comes to which rotation is better. Same thing with Diesel electric locomotives, they run at maximum output in either direction. All electric motors are this way.

If it's been a year since you put it together, you really need to pull the intake and the lifters and see if there's any cam prelube left on the lobes. If there's not, you can dab a bit on the lifter bottoms and put them back in the holes. It's best not to put too much though. And do not put any on the sides of the lifter. Motor oil only there. The thing that's critical at startup is for the cam lobe to grip the lifter bottom at fireup, to set the lifter, into motion, spinning in it's bore. No spin and you're guaranteed to wipe the lobe. You don't want thick cam lube on the lifter sides making it more difficult for the lifter to spin. Also check each lifter to see if it rotates freely when you drop them in the bore. Use a diesel spec oil or a non detergent oil for cam break-in. Do NOT use synthetic oil what so ever. After the break-in run of 20 to 30 minutes, if its' sucessful, then kill it and change the oil and filter. And use fresh oil, probably best to use the same oil as break-in, run that 500 miles and change to the oil you plan to run in it permanently.
