I have been battling a couple gremlins since doing my HCI swap . Mostly the car was running pig rich , backfiring and had hesitation and lag in the low end .

I havent had a lot of time to mess with the car due to time constraints but while at work I did a lot of research and compiled a list of things to try . everything from pulling codes to tearing the motor back down and advancing the cam .

I decided to try the easiest thing first , which was swap out the CAI with my factory airbox .

FIXED!! its like a whole different car !!

Apparently the CAI I had was really screwing with my C&L MA . It was a Mac version with the conical filter in the engine bay . I read a post on corral where the C&L meters should not be used with CAI's due to wash from the radiator fan and alternator fan messing with the meter .

I was so pleased with the easy fix . Just thought I'd share for future reference .

Yea CAI can really mess with some MAF sensors. Even stock ones. I had a BBK on my 01 and had to rotate the MAF to get it to pick up the air correctly from the curve in the CAI. Worked great after that.

You'll probably pick up performance too. That old set-up wasn't really a CAI in any sense of the term that I consider a CAI to be.

That's great to hear you got it fixed. Clocking the MAF can definitely be helpful if any issues come back for ya.

Good luck and thanks for the feedback.

If it was sucking air from the engine bay then it was in fact a HOT air intake system.....I would agree with saying you would gain from going back to stock because it sucks air from the fender..

Do you guys think even a fender mounted CAI would screw up the maf reading? I was thinking of getting the mac cai but the one the go's into the fender...

The bigger concern to me would be any bends right before the MAF (the MAC CAI on my 94 has a bend right before the MAF, for instance). This is indeed where clocking the MAF can help if an issue is seen.

If you look at the info that C&L has their MA is designed to be used with a stock airbox.
