Fog Lights Electrical Q.

Hi, I bought the GT Fog Lights from Ford and I have a Q about the Installation. Is there a way to just turn on the fog lights with the Fogs switch? Because the instructions show that the fog lights will turn on with the headlights switch also. Hoe can I avoid that? And if I ca how can I still use the plugs and wiring from the car.

In the following site I have put the instructions so you can understand what I’m talking about.

http://www.geocities.com/cabo_2k1/05Stang/FogLights.html

Another thing I wan later on I want to put driving lights to my car, can I use the third switch on the car? And/or the one that goes on the coin thing?

Thanks.

I believe the directions mean that the fog light switch only operates when the headlights are on. In other words, as long as your low beam headlights are On, you have the choice of running with fog lights On or Off. This is how the factory fogs are wired.
Is this satisfactory, or would you prefer to be able to turn the foglights on even when the headligts are Off?

I think he wants to be able to turn the fog lights on without even having the headlights on. Cause that's what I want to do...

i hooked a relay into my parking lights.....so whenever they're on, my fogs are on. Saves you from having to pull up the console to run the wiring, and nothing goes through my firewall. And there's no obtrusive wiring into the passenger compartment.

I like it, but maybe it doesn't suit everybody

i have a ? on this subject also. i want to get factory fog lights for my car, but mine is a basic model(didnt come w/ foglights, traction control, etc). i thought i remebered hearing that id need a new wiring harness to install the fog lights. is this true or should they just bolt up to what i have.

and on your page with the instructions the tool that has the red "whats this" next to it is an torque wrench(older style i believe)

If this is true then I'm cool with it. Because I'm planning on putting driving lights on my car and I want to be able to choose if I want fog lights or driving lights, or all on.

For the driving lights can I use the switch of the Traction Control? And just find out what cables to connect to?

And do we have cables running under the coin holder? Because I got that switch also.

Thanks.

Ok I bought my lights (Christmas present) from Ford and it comes with all the wiring and the switches (for the coin and for the one under the stereo) my car is a 01 so they send me the second switch for it because you just need to connect the cables that come with the head lights to the wiring of the car. The connections or plugs are on the car at least mine where, so you just replace the cover with the switch.
Take a look at the link.

I have the late model 01 that has the switch under the stereo. i used all the internal wiring to keep stock but spliced in a harness/ relay / fuse iand ran it in the engine bay. I had to steal the connectors for the lights themselves from my 96.

Fog Lights:
On an '01, I believe the connector under the "coin holder" is for the convertible top switch. In that case, you should use the switch that mounts on the panel under the radio. As FunkMasterFlex noted, your second question refers to a beam-type torque wrench, which you probably will not need for this install.
The 24 pin connector shown on the "alert" page is used to pass wires through the firewall. You access it from under the hood. It is located high and near the driver's side fender.
You can "get by" by just splicing into the Black/White wire, which becomes live only when the both the fog light switch and headlight switch are On. The Green/Black wire is used to operate a second relay included in the Kit, which disables the fog lights when you switch to high beams. The consequence of skipping that connection is that the fog lights will stay on during either high beam or low beam operation (as long as you have the fog light switch on too), which is the way I prefer.

Some 'stangers' want to be able to operate their fog lights even with the low beams Off, so as to use them as a substitute for daytime running lights. To accomplish this, they change the wiring to the fog light switch.

Driving Lights:
If you car does not have Traction Control, you could buy the switch from Ford and rewire the connector to operate a relay mounted in the engine bay. There are power feed wires behind that panel that you can use to enable Driving Light On-Off control whenever the key is in the "run" position, or just when the headlights are on. Your choice.

OK. By low beam you mean, head lights on all tha way? or just the yellow lights on? If its the yellow light on its cool, becasue i want o be able to switch betweeng Fog and Driving lights, lets say in the early mornings.

I would like to use them as teh fog lights are set up.
Fogy morning I use fog lights.
Early not to dark morning I use Driving lights.
But all of them with the tail lights on and the yellow lights on.
Is that possible? Do you understand what i want to do?

I think I understand your intent. You would like to be able to operate both your fog and driving lights, in both the "half extended" and "fully extended" positions of the headlight switch. Yes, by "low beams" I meant headlights fully on, not the halfway (parking & tail lights only) position. You will need a wiring change to the fog light switch to accomplish your objective. You can install the fog lights per the Kit instructions, then make this change later. I'll study the factory schematics and look for a convenient place to tap a tail light or parking light feed.

One point of warning: If you drive with headlights + foglights + driving lights on (which you could do if you wanted), you will be in violation of laws in most states that limit the total number of forward-facing lamps simultaneously on. While this law is not aggressively enforced, the Police could use it as an excuse to harrass you.

Thanks. where can I find the Schematics? I would like to take a look at it?
and see how the connectors are wired for the fog, Trac Con. and teh coin holder (for a LED thing that I found). DO you have any idea?
I'm glad its possible.

Grate I bed CA is one of does states. so I asume its 4 lamps. Once I saw on the net a guy had his Shelby version of a 99+ with the Fog lights, head lights and big round lights on the middle. i want to put small driving lights.
Would the CDC Quad lights have this problem???
I dont think I would be driving with all of them on. Exept for Mustang meetings.

Thanks again.

Whoops! I was wrong about the fog light switch feed. According to my schematic, factory wiring allows fog light operation in both the parking lamps (half-way) and headlamps (full out) position. So you don't need to change any wiring to obtain the operating flexibility you want.

If you connect a tap to the brown wire out of the fog light switch connector, and use the wire to feed the driving light switch, you will achieve the identical capability for driving lights.

I have the '03 factory wiring manual, purchased from Helm (who produces them for Ford). I assuming '01 wiring is for the most part identical.
Fog light switch connector wire colors:
Light Blue/Red . . . . night illumination
Brown . . . . +12V feed from the headlight switch
White/Black . . . to fog light relay coil
Black . . . . chassis ground
The switch closes between Brown and Black/White.

Traction control switch connector:
Light blue/Red . . . . night illumination
Black . . . . chassis ground
Pink/Black . . . +12V in the ignition switch Run position (two of these at connector)
Black/Light blue . . . . cathode of an LED internal to the switch (indicates TCS On)
Gray . . . . to TC/ABS module.
The switch is a momentary contact between Pink/black and Gray.

Power top switch connector (console):
White/Violet . . . . +12V in Run or Acc ignition switch position, via Fuse 2.20
Violet . . . . . raise (open) top contact
Gray/Light blue . . . . lower (close) top contact

I searched for the law/regulation on the Internet. I found several mentions of it, but did not discover in which States it applies (it might even be a federal law). If the fog and driving lights are small and close together, they might appear to be a single lamp when both On, so no problem, IMO.

Thanks. I need to check the colors, and see what to do after that.
Thanks for all the info. thanks again. I dont think I'll be driving with the 6 lights on so no problem. thanks again.

That depends . . . .
what kit did you buy: Mustang-specific (Ford) or aftermarket (generic; fits any car)?
where did you mount the switch?
