Wrong. Some shareholders are rubbing their hands with glee.

Still, it's much easier to ruin peoples lives by laying them off than it is to somehow find a way to come up with a full product line which can go toe-2-toe with the imports (what segment is the Ford 500 aimed at anyway?!?).

One of the pre-eminant problems with Detroit is management. Were it not for the fact that most of these senior managers are fighting to insure that their jobs aren't on the block they might see that part of the problem is management style. Here we are in the information/knowledge worker age and they're still managing like we were in the industrial revolution.

Collaborative management would not cure the ills at Ford, GM, and Chrysler but it'll give them more alternatives to address the problems.

I believe the new Ford Fusion is designed to go toe-to-toe with the imports (Accord and Camry).

You think it will send their stock up?

The 500 is okay but they should have made it RWD and look more like the show car. DC is doing great with the RWD 300/Magnum/Charger.

Fusion might make a good import beater.

On the whole the lineup is too bland and they still need work on quality. Witness the latest 500/Freestyle recall. Ford doesn't seem as bad off as GM but it's getting pretty ugly.

Anytime layoffs are anounced, the stock of any company falls. This signals the sign that the company is not performing well. Stocks go up when the cars are selling and the companies are hiring.

DCX is doing very well with the LX (300 / Charger / Magnum) platform. No incentives are required to move these cars off the lot and they are on as good or better than the europen / asian cometetors. People that buy the SRT8's are coming from Mercedes, BMW and Acura....

The 500 is a very nice car on the inside. It's just a little under powered and the outside is screaming for attention. If the 500 looked like the Fusion in the front, it might be a lot better off. BTW: you can get a fully loaded Fusion for 26K. That is a very good deal.

If GM can make it a few more years they can probably put some nice cars on the streets... Rick Wagner sent a memo to his employees last week that GM would not be going into bankrupcy.

No, but it'll slash their operating costs and increase dividends. Stock price will fall, but those already with a sizeable stake can ride that blip.

Stock saw a nice rally Friday on pre-announcement news. With Ford(and GM) Wall Street is fully aware as are we that our companies are just too big. There is too much management and too many factories for the shrinking market share size Ford has, which has now been taken by Toyota(who has made it clear for years that their end of decage goal is to beat GM and become the largest automaker in the world, they will succeed, and sadly Ford has retreated to being numero tres. Look for public announcements in January and February in regards to this memo and plant closings.

It really depends on how top heavy the company is/was. Cutting out some management may have been neccessary to balance it out.

I assume you're in a management position at Ford and thus know this for a fact? Otherwise, my suspicion is that it's more to do with Dyoct's comments - Ford are retreating in the face of Toyota. Closing plants, shedding jobs and basically accepting a dwindling market share.

Good to know our kids'll be driving Celica's and dreaming of the cars of yesteryear, like the Mustang, Camaro, Corvette.

Funny thing. I bet there are a lot of automakers surviving with less market position than Ford. So why is it only Ford is doomed if they go to number 3?

I hate to see a big American company failing, but perhaps Ford needs this. I'd love nothing more than to buy American, but when I buy a daily driver, it'll probably be an import. Blindly buying from one type of company only tells them that they don't need quality products to be competetive. I don't see Ford going anywhere, but I do see them having to look in the mirror soon. And hopefully when they're finished powdering their collective nose, they'll be the hot bitch at the party.

Blue collars aren't safe either as plants will be shut down as well, some are no brainers, St Louis vs Louisville; some are still in the works, ie Atlanta or Wixom? Basically the cuts are around the company, not just management or not just assembly workers, it is shared by all divisions. Yes there is quite a bit of waste, but it's not only at the management level.

Sadly yes, we are retreating, I think it's a shame and that we should use the opportunity to overcome GM (ie maybe they will go bankrupt) and become number two...there is no stopping Toyota, that is a given.

We're doomed because our costs and production would be operating as if we are at 25% of share. Right now we're barely above 15%. How much does that fall when the Chinese enter the fray and bring in $8,000 cars and make Kia look expensive?
