I'm looking for a new short block for my car and wanted to find out where yall have gotten them. Is it worth the extra money to get the cobra crank? I'm not planning on making to much power, just about 350rwhp since it is my daily driver. what company do yall recomend. would it be better to just buy the kit and have a local shop assemble it?

it's only like $500 more. You never know when you might want more. and it's cheaper to do it now.

The rods are the really weak part of the SOHC engines. the pistons are the second weakest point. But as he said above it is worth it to spend the money now and get the entire bottom end forged. Its not that much more and its a nice piece of mind. You can check out companies like dss racing for decent priced quality rotating assemblies.

They have 3 different levels of shortblock ranging from the
basic rebuild with factory rods and crank and forged pistons for $1999
to the mid priced pro mod with forged crank rods and pistons for $2999
all the way up to the Supermod for $3999.
http://www.dssracing.com/46mod.html
http://www.dssracing.com/46promod.html
http://www.dssracing.com/46supermod.html

Something like the pro mod would be you best option in my opinion. I cant stress how much the factory 4.6 sohc rods suck. For the extra $1000 over the basic engine you will be getting a forged crank and H beam forged rods.

getting a kit and having a machine shop do the work may save you a buck or two also.

I am piecing my own block... I bought a 4.6 GT block which was cleaned and so forth and the company put forged dished pistons in it and stock rods and crank... All the pieces in the motor is brand new!!! I got it shipped for a tad bit less of 600... Then I contacted them due to them messing up on shipping prices so they cut me a good deal on forged H beam rods... 301 Shipped with arp 2000 bolts... And now I can get a cobra forged crank for less than 300 shipped... But thats a used one... I bought a hi volume oil pump for less than a 100 shipped and now I need billet oil pump gears, arp hardware and some gaskets... I am putting together the ultimate budget 4.6... I also have stage 3 P&P PI heads but they have stock valves and springs and SHM blower cams with 800 miles I got for $850 shipped... You can build a 4.6 cheap but it takes time... And a lot of looking!!!

Call up Tim @ T&J, or pm him, he's "cobra killer" on here. He built my shortblock, all manley forged rods, pistons etc, I couldn't be happier, his customer service is 2nd to none.

as far as the crank, if you only wanna make 350-400RWHP, the stock crank will more then suffice, thats another thing I talked to tim about, he said unless you wanna make crazy power, 500RWHP + then the cobra crank is not worthit.

well, it was 1400$ for the SHM, Manley kit, that included rods, pistons, rings, bearings etc., I got oil pump gears as well which were 350$ as well...

as far as labor, 250 for the balancing and machining of the shortblock. and I honestly don't remember the labor tim charged to actually rebuild everything, It wasn't much though, I was more worried about the guy locally who put my motor back that he didn't screw anything up and worried about shipping costs. But If I had to estimate parts + labor through T&J was a little over 2,000$ and thats with the billett oil pump gears( not needed)...

I highly recomend billet oil pump gears... They are like insurance on your car... You dont always need it but there could always be that one time... If the pump goes... Rods, pistons, crank and who knows what all else will follow!

My motor was built by T&J Performance and I'm completely satisfied with it. You really have to think about what you want to do with the car in the future when you consider which crank to buy. For $4-$600 more than the stock crank and as addicting as power is I'd spring for the cobra crank and do it once. Good luck.

I don't wanna quote T&J or Tim. just call him up and see what he can do. What T&J understands is that when you rebuild a motor, you're already spending ALOT of money on parts, spending time, giving your car up for a while, sending your motor, alot of stress and anxiety of hoping all this money you're throwing into it is worthit. so they really do give good deals on labor, and thats why they are 2nd to none.
