Friend bought an R35 Skyline

Apparently it has a GPS logger in the car that records way too much data on the car, and is compiled in a report when you take it in for service.

It appears that they are looking to void warranties left and right on them.

1. Exceeding 100mph on public roads voids warranty.

2.Exceeding ~80mph in the GPS location of a known race track voids warranty unless being used for a known AUTOCROSS event that is sanctioned. Drag racing will void warranty.

3. Enabling and using the Drag Launch feature will void warranty (and is easy to enable on the car)

4. It logs boost levels to record if you exceed stock boost settings, warranty void if you do.

Can you guys believe this business? Is this stuff really as true as he says? I would think for $80k you would get more support behind your car, and not a set of handcuffs like that. Hell if you buy a Z06 you'll still be faster, and you can play with the car all day.....they even give you a DVD with the Z06 to teach you how to drive the hell out of it!

I got it from my friend who just bought the car over the weekend. He said he was told all that crap when he bought the car.

It looks really cool, but I think the prototype had it beat in the looks department.

To me it looks like the bastard child of a supra and a 350z.... Z06 is still the top dog for under or around $80k in my book. Buying this car would be like having a box of condoms on a singles cruise that has a combo lock that you don't know the combo too. Sure you gottem but you can't do a damn thing...

I think with that black box (if it's all true) it'd be more like bringing your spouse on a single's cruise.

My first impressions were a mix of new Mitsu eclipse, and Nissan 350Z. The rear end looks strangely like a Corvette. look at the shoulders in the rear. I think once you see these out on the streets more they won't turn heads much more than a 350Z, which stopped catching attention a few years ago. Most people will probably just drive them stock. It's the second owners that we need to worry about once they start getting sold provate party and traded in.

Muy interesante. I wonder what part is true. I thought that the whole black box business was a little far fetched to begin with, but the fact that is DOES exist is crazy. Hopefully it doesn't hit the US with that box, but his dealer gave him the STRICT impression that the box was real and in fact functioning the way that article just described.

Don't forget that all new cars sold have a 'black box' that records all driver functions like speed, braking and so on. They have been used to clear people but they can also be used to convict you. The insurance industry has been trying to get access to the info for years for litigations from accidents and to deny coverage if they found you to be racing and such. It sounds like that what Nissan did is add the GPS feature, but everyones cell phone is GPS equipped and can be used to track where you've been anyhow.

The freedoms we 'thought' we had are quickly disappearing.

I know that the BCM or whatever records a lot of data, but it only stores it on most cars when an airbag sensor is triggered, otherwise it rewrites the data. It is setup mostly to record: Speed, Throttle Position, Braking, Sensor deployed, Seatbelt activity, etc.

So when they say that the reason the airbag didn't go off was because you were underweight and without a seatbelt plugged in the manufacturer doesn't need to pay you jack squat.

But seriously though, I think Nissan is just trying to keep there flagship from going the way of about half the Ferrari Enzo's that were in exsistance. Burning in a ditch in peices.... That and the fact they don't want to back ANY of there cars. I had a buddy that bought a Evo IX and someone that he knew had seen him at a auto-x event and told his dealer offhandedly. He came in for a minor wheel speed sensor issue and they denied his warentee from then on..... Z06 FTW...

Well, GM goes out to track races here in Arizona and "secretly" voids warranties for cars that they can identify by VIN#. It's rare, but it happens at a few events a year where they walk around in plain clothes recording numbers from dashes in tech lines etc. You would think they were part of the tech inspection.

Get this..... My buddy Gilbert had me build him a pretty bad ass turbo conversion cobalt ss, and he raced it every few months in Algadones Mexico at a state-sponsored (mexican state) drag racing event on closed public highways. He got a letter in the mail with photographs from GM notifying him of when and where they saw his car and that his warranty was now void. I couldn't believe that because it's even in a different country for crying out loud. He was my only friend to recieve a void in the sort of manner, but most others got busted at the dealership for running after market sparkplugs WTF?!

What freedoms? The U.S. Patriot Act took those away. The terrorists have already won. We gave away our freedoms because the government promoted fear.
The black box is very real. So are satellites that can find us anywhere. Even the damn Kroger cards and other such things keep track of all we do.

thats exactly right... it only stores a small amount of data from just before and just after a accident.

I actually think the Skyline looks pretty cool. I think it looks nice in red. It's not a car I'd go out and buy, even if I had the money, but I certainly wouldn't mind having one.

I think even more ridiculous then the GT-R's warnings was the launch of the 2002 Impreza WRX. Remember how the car came with a FREE 1 year SCCA membership but every dealer voided your warranty if they found out you actually used it in competition?

LOL...

That said the GT-R is an outstanding car. I've always been a Nissan guy myself in the past but honestly I'll take the 1992 GT-R R32 over this thing any day.
