Friken Mr Gasket strikes again

started battlin with overheating multiple burpings with no luck, just kept overheating and overflowing the catch can. Finally took that mr gasket 180 hi perf. out threw it in pot brought to boil did nothing barely could open it in a vice with a hammer lol crap, drilled a couple holes in a new stant superstat therm. drove around for a little while didn't go over 195 seems OK

I feel your pain, I went through 2 Mr Gasket thermostats in about 3-4 months. I put a stocker in and have had no problems since then. I hear they are making the Mr Gasket t-stats in China now, maybe thats the problem.

geesh. I just finished doing some stangnet searching on this very topic. I upgraded everything except my 180 Mr. Gasket and I'm still heating up. I think may have to swap it out for another especially after reading this.......

Yeah they're made in China now.

I put in a Mr Gasket 195 when I built my engine, "lucky" for me mine ran too cool. It wouldnt go over 160 on the highway, and this was in the winter so I had no heat so I quickly swapped it out for a stocker 195. Now I'm running a 180 Superstat because it matches my fan switch.

I tried that Mr G again in the heat of the summer on a short drive... still ran at 160.

Damn ... I just bought a Mr. Gasket 180* T-stat today. Haven't put it in, yet. Guess I'll go ahead and toss it back and get me a Superstat like I'm running in my '84, then. Used to be the Mr. Gasket T-stats were the way to go, but if they changed their manufacturing quality and went Über-cheap, then ... bleh. Do not want.

I stopped buying anything the said "Mr Gasket" on it when the bought Southside Machine, inventor/purveyor of arguably one of the cheapest, easiest and best tweaks for traction ever devised for the Fox platform, the lift bar, and dismantled it. Stadt is all you ever need in t-stats.

I wouldn't of minded as much if it stuck open but shut it's a brand new engine, frigan 10 dollar part they should be liable if somebody lost and engine when i hit 220 i shut it right off. Symptoms= overheating at any speed, overflowing catch can, no flow in rad coolant just rises up from pressure with no where to go, no bubbles of any size.

I keep hearing horror stories like this. I got my 180 Mr Gasket maybe 3 years ago or more, and its been awesome. Must have been right before the change. I guess I'm lucky.

Just had to yank the MR G out of mine as well, stuck closed.

Just swapped a Stant 180* Superstat into both my Foxes yesterday. Not a dramatic difference, only reads slightly cooler on the gauges, but no more pinging in 100+ degree heat.

FWIW, never had a Stant Superstat go bad on me yet. Only thing I don't like about them is they don't have a bleeder thingy in them like the Motorcraft and other brands do, so I usually drill a 1/8" hole and rotate it toward the top so I don't get any trapped air bubbles. The Mr. Gasket style T-stats I've had in the past ALWAYS seemed to stick open, and every single one of those stupid "failsafe" thermostats sold at Autozone has also failed and stuck wide open within a month (or less) of use.
