hi there,

i own a 1995 V6 and i was wondering if i can get an 4.6 engine from a 96-98 GT and replace it , i am not sure if they can match because 94-95 GT are 5.0 and 96-98 are 4.6 but once againg 94-98 same car..., there is any mod that i need to do to change an engine from a 95 3.8 to get an GT engine that is not 5.0 ? because i know for sure.. that 5.0 will use way more gas.. and am trying to run and safe money

can i just buy a 96-98 GT engine and change it for my 95 V6 ?

the work would be extensive and not really worth it, everything on ur car is built to work with a 6 cylinder, so you cant just throw a v8 in a drive away. you would need the computer, tranny, rear end, and many other things.

like stated above it would involve probably more money then what its worth... Im thinking you would have better luck with a 5.0 motor.. There are a few parts that will interchange. I believe the tranny will but it won't last as long.

You would need to buy a new computer, wiring harness, maf, And im sure there would probably need to be some suspension work (the v-6 being lighter then a v-8)

Again probably more hassle then what its worth... Even though im thinking about doing the same thing on a 4 cyl. fox...

I sold my V6 and got a V8. It's the easiest way to go.

you'd spend about the same amount of money buying a 5.0 as you would transfering the engine in... other than what was stated, the suspension, drivetrain/shaft, not to mention the body wasn't designed to handle that much weight in the engine, so it wouldn't even drive like a regular GT... just some stuff to think about... people have done it successfully...

"and am trying to run and safe money"

if you are trying to SAVE money, why do a swap when you can sell yours for 5k and buy a GT for 8k ?

selling the v6 and buying a GT is ALOT easier especially when you're dealing with cars that are 10 years old.

there is the increase of insurance, keep in mind... plus, he might be emotionally attached to his V6... but it would be cheaper, if you HAD to do this, to just sell yours and get a GT, either 5.0, or 4.6... (and the 5.0 doesn't get too bad of mileage.... I get 18 city, close to 28 highway... mine's a 95 5.0L)

-and no need to point out spelling errors here... there are tons in each thread... it's part of the territory.

the insurance difference is not that much. i have a 95 GT and my liability insurance is only $78 a month with multiple tickets on my record.

speaking of insurance, if he gets collision and theft insurance wouldn't the insurance company only give him the replacement value for a V6 and not a GT? my theft and collision payment is $148 a month, but i live in los angeles so his will probably be much lower.

this guy has been given alot of reasons not to do the swap if financial reasons are his only concern.

well, that's why you save your reciepts w/o them, you can't prove anything on your ride, but neither can they... so yes, w/o reciepts, they would insure it for the price of a V6, about $1500 if stolen (first offer)...

so then he would take a check for the cost of the V6 'stang, plus the check for the cost of the V8 conversion and do what?..................................................................................................................... buy a GT!

the only way someone could do this swap and save alot is if they do all the wrenching themself. and this guy (no offense) doesn't sound like he's passed any SAE courses.

The insurance argument is a moot point...quit debating it. If the guy says it is a significant difference, then so be it. It might not be where you live, but apparently it is where he lives (and judging by my V6, it is for me, too for that matter). Move on...

A guy on here that did the V6 to 5.0 swap said he wouldn't do it again. He seemed to have a few problems after the swap if I remember correctly. But...if you have another car to get around in and you are good with this kinda mech work, then go for it. Hell...worst case scenario, you yank the engine and after seeing what you are getting yourself into, you put it back in and sell the mutha No harm, no foul.

and you lean a valuable lesson in the process too how to remove and install an engine... I learned SO much on my first engine swap, although it was a 302 for a 302 in a early model stang... so huge engine bay, and no electrical advancements...

I found a wrecked crown victoria police car in a pick and pull. It was a 99 and I think those have the PI heads. If you can find a donor like that and get a good long block, it might be feasible, but the electronics are guaranteed to be a major pain. If you go with 96+ mustang style electronics, you have an OBD2 fuel injection system and you will need to find the proper wiring harness and sensors. Ford may have made an EEC-IV controlled 4.6 in the crown victoria, but I'm not sure. Either way, you will spend many hours tracing the wiring diagram and checking parts interchange.

If you don't have smog checks in your area, you could put in a carburated 302 or 351 with a lot less hassle, but your gas mileage will be poor.

I think the only options that make sense are: Hop up your 3.8, trade up to a v8 car, or install a Tbird SC engine.

The SC engine is a beefed up 3.8 with a supercharger. The SN95 5.0 used a 5.0 T-bird intake setup, so the chance of an SC engine fitting is pretty good. The wiring harness can't be very different between the two cars, so that will simplify things, and lastly, you might be able to find a complete donor car pretty cheap.

Those SC engines can be hopped up pretty easily, just change a pulley for more boost and get a chip and you should eat stock 5.0's for breakfast.

It would help if we knew what kind of budget you are playing with... Like it was said before, you could always just modify the V6. You can always stroke your 3.8 with a forged bottom end and pump gobs of boost through it just like a V8...

Just food for thought...

If your serious about the swap find a donor car. Its the easiest way to go. And go for the 5.0. The majority including me think that the 4.6 from 96-98 are dogs. Ive raced one and I onlt have catback and pulled no doubt. Plus Im a vert. So do what you want.

AND FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, STOP BITCHING ABOUT INSURANCE PEOPLE, WE ALL SPEND MORE MONEY ON GAS ANYWAYS.

i never understood why the factor of insurance even crosses anyone's mind. alot of people ask me "how much is the insurance and gas?"
who gives a ****, whatever it costs its worth every dollar!!. i bought the car because i loved it, not because of what the insurance might cost.

I'm getting ready to do a 94 gt to a 95 v6 swap. Everyone says it's to expensive. If you do it your self you could save tons of money. I just bought the wrecked 94 gt for $800 and it has everything i need. I think the biggest part is it is going to be time consuming. Plus there is about a $500 a year price difference in the v6 and gt insurance.

Later.
