Ok, so here is the deal... my fuel pump will some times stop pumping fuel. I don't know when this started but it seems like it may have been an issue for quite a while that I thought was due to something else. What seems to happen is that when the fuel pump heats up it will stop pumping fuel. It never does it when the block is cold. If it has sat for 30 minutes to an hour after it stops pumping, it will start working again. I'm wondering if there is some sort of blockage in the lines or if the pump is just bad and failing when the internal parts expand from heat. I THINK but I can't be sure that if I rev it that it will pump at high RPM even if it stops at low RPM.
The pump I have in there is just a stock replacement type pump, I think it was made by Carter. Anyways, I know a new pump is only 20 bux or so but I really like to trouble shoot things and replace based on fact as opposed to throwing money at the part that seems to be the culprit. Any trouble shooting steps you guys can recomend ?
I don't have a pre-pump filter in place yet and I know I should. I'm considering puting one in but I don't want to do it until the tank is basically empty. If I drain the tank now the gas I loose will cost more then the filter lol.
Are there any good pumps that will work for EFI as well as carbed setups ?
Has anyone found a good in tank pump for the classics yet ?
If it is the stock type mechanical pump then I'm betting the spring in there is weak. I had the spring in my mechanical pump break while I was on the hwy. SUCKED!! I quickly narrowed it down to the pump and with the help of a very friendly local auto supply store (which I could luckily reach on my rollerblades) I got a new pump and replaced it on the side of the road. A little scary, but I got it done.
Yep I agree, replace the pump, when the engine gets hot the spring gets weaker.
I had this problem with many pumps, when you get it off you will also notice that the pump lever is loose.
