A pick to release the plastic clips on either side, a flat head screw driver or 8mm socket with ratchet to release the clamp that holds it in place. Its recommended to replace the plastic clips because they get brittle with age. Its also easier to insert the clips in the proper orientation on the fuel lines and then snap them back onto the new fuel filter once its tightened back into the holder.

Are the clips an autoparts store item or a dealer item?

Either or. Dealer will likely be more expensive. Most parts stores should have them though.

I got clips with my new filter. Watch out for the o-rings in the fuel lines, they can fall out and you'll have a nice fuel leak.

Some do, some dont. I use predominantly Motorcraft parts and 90 percent of their filters dont come with new clips.

Really? Thats why I DO buy Motorcraft ones, because they have all come with the clips. Odd...

At the dealership, Ive only gotten a few over the last five years that have actually come with clips. Any time I need clips I have to get them from the parts room. Who knows, maybe the guy in parts takes them out of the boxes I know the few that we sell at Advance dont have clips in them. Kind of off topic, main point is that if the filter doesnt have new clips, its a good idea to grab some.

This is really easy to do.. All you need is a Flat Head and a towel to protect you from all the gas that WILL spill all over the god damm place...

1) Buy from Motorcraft(it has the clips you need)
2) Unplug the fuel connector in your trunk... (driver side) Start engine and let it run until it dies
3) Get rear end on jackstands
4) Go underneath the car from the BACK
5) Near the back of the rear tire passenger side.. RIGHT infront of the fuel tank is the filter.
6) Unscrew the metal clamp.
7) Pry the Plastic clips off the filter
8) Grab your towel and pull the fuel lines off the filter(gas will get all over the place if you dont...
9) Remove old filter.. Put in new filter in SAME direction... Put the metal clamp back on...
10) Reconnect fuel lines AND the safety clips and make sure they dont come off.
11) Wipe EVERYTHING in the area down with a towel and some water.
12) Plug in the connector in the trunk.
13) Start car/Check for leaks... And remove jackstands..


Your all done... I did this acouple of days ago and its easier than installing the MAC intake...

If no one mentioned it, de-pressurize the fuel system before starting. This can be done with a bypass fuel-pressure gauge at the Schrader valve.

Or just unplug the connector in the trunk.... And let the car run until it shuts off
