Proud owner of a 2002 gt, but my fuel gauge is acting wierd. the first 40-50 miles i drive the needle is in the full position, but by the time i hit about 65-70 miles it is just in front of the 3/4 mark, and the rest of the tank it takes me about 40-50 miles between 1/4's. but, at the last 1/4 tank mark, it will move randomly between "LOW FUEL" and 1/4 tank, sometimes back and forth every few seconds. im thinking my fuel level sender is going bad. i doubt its because the gas is sloshing around in the tank because it also does it when the car is sitting still. any ideas??

Mine has done that since new. The closer to empty you get, the faster it drops. It stays at full for a while but once it starts moving there it goes.
I've gotten used to it. I still get 300-325 miles per tank (mostly highway) so i know it's just how the gauge reads.

All Ford Gauges do this. We have/had a 2004 Mustang GT, 2007 Shelby GT500, 2005 Explorer, 1997 Explorer, 2004 Lightning, 1999 F150, 1997 Ranger and every single one of them has done this. Another problem Ive noticed is that sometimes the Fuel Gauge wont read full even after you filled the tank and it will just randomly move to F while driving. LOL
My 1997 Explorer was bad at doing this Id be driving down the road and it would read 1/4 tank and then 2 miles down the road my low fuel light would come on.

I drive a 2004 4.0 ranger and the fuel gauge works perfectly normal. While no fuel gauge is perfectly linear in its representation of the fuel level (the tank is not a perfectly symmetric shape) the gauge does progress smoothly from full to empty and back. It doesn't have a 3/4 to 1/4 dead zone or anything like that. The problem as initially described at the start of this thread is far from "normal".
Actually now that i think about it, my '88 5.0 does the same thing. Barely moves at full and then drops faster the closer to E it goes.

IMO these just seems normal. First 50 miles +/- will make it seem like that 4.6 gets incredible fuel economy, then wham it just drops like a rock. I've seen the needle move before...it doesnt move smoothly it goes in increments. Start driving and it'll be the same for 20 miles, then all of a sudden it looks like it dropped a ton. I've just gotten used to it.

there is a SSM (special service message) or a TSB out on this and I think it had something to-do wth the brands of full out ther, some have to much sulpher in them and mess-up the float in the fuel sender. there was a list of "approved" fuels from FoMoCo and I remember Chevron, BP and only a few others that dont have extra additives in them that causae this
I've use Chevron since my car was new. It has always done it. I just got used to it.
