ok guys, im not sure if this will be an issue or not, but the plastic piece (looks like a hat) on the end of one of my 24# ers is cracked, will it still work properly, or do i need a new injector

If it is just cracked should not be a problem. The "hat" as you call it just helps center the injector in the injector boss, although the "O" ring also does that job as well. I have seen where the "hat" is completely gone and the engine had been running just fine as the "O" rings were still good. The "hat" also helps prevent the injector from going to far into the injector boss as well. I would have no problem reusing the injector.

you dont need a new injector.the pintle cap needs replacing..the best thing to do is buy an fuel injector service kit (see pic below a kit will contain enough to do all 8 injectors) i bought mine off e-bay for about $14 this kit allows you to clean, replace filters, spacers and o-rings since you are at a point you can remove all of them click on link below which demonstrates how to clean injectors and properly service the injectors....if injectors have alot of mileage on them this will increase performance...

link to service injectors.... http://www.fordfuelinjection.com/?p=82

I agree - get a new pintle cap. You dont want to run without one or with a cracked one if you can help it. The hats help protect the injector pins from getting gummed up due to fogging.

Good luck.

Fuel injector seal kits with 2 O rings and a pintle cap (Borg-Warner P/N 274081) are available at Pep Boys auto parts. Cost is about $2.74 per kit.. The following are listed at the Borg-Warner site ( http://www.borg-warner.com ) as being resellers of Borg-Warner parts:

http://www.partsplus.com/ or http://www.autovalue.com/ or http://www.pepboys.com/ or http://www.federatedautoparts.com/

Most of the links above have store locators for find a store in your area.

Use motor oil on the O rings when you re-assemble them & everything will slide into place. The gasoline will wash away any excess oil that gets in the wrong places and it will burn up in the combustion chamber.

The pintle caps fit either injectors with a pin sticking out the injector end or 4 with more tiny holes in the injector end
The pintle caps hold the O ring in place and keep it from sliding off and into the manifold. If the correct pintle caps are used, they do not have any effect on the injector spray pattern.

Heating the pintle caps in boiling water makes it much easier to install them.
