Ok i just got my enigne working the other day with starter fulid beacuse the fuel pump is not sucking the fuel out of the tank.. my qestion is that do i need to have feul in the line before I have it pump or is it supose to suck it out its self I ran it for about 5 min but there is no fuel comming out?

If you primed the engine with starter fulid and it fired up, it should only take a few seconds for fuel to be pulled from the tank. If after 5 minutes there is no fuel, then you lhave other problems. Dumb question, but how much fuel is in the tank? You might want to lcheck the fuel lines for an air leak (rubber hoses)

Ok well I know the fuel pump works beacuse its a new fuel pump and the tank is full with fresh gas.. It could be a air leak somewhere in the line not sure but everything stayed the way it was when the engine came out? all the lines I could see are nice and tight...

1-Check the lines and connections
2-If you have access to a vacuum bleeder (pump style) hook it to the line coming into the pump and see if you can pull fuel. How long has it sat without being fired up?
3-Sending unit. (My guess) Loosen the line at the pump and at the sending unit. Can you blow air through the line? If not there is a blockage. Check the line coming out of the sending unit. Mine had sat a very long time and the sending unit looked like it had tar in it! Took a coat hanger and ran into the sending unit and pulled out a bunch of gunk till fuel flowed.
4-Probably not the pump but it could be faulty. Make sure in/out is hooked up correctly and run a piece of hose from a can of gas into the pump. Will this work?
5-Also check pump to carb lines and filter.

I would check all lines for blocks. Pump to carb and pump to tank. If no blocks run a hose from can of gas to pump and see. Whether that works or not will tell you where to go from there.

anuther trick is 2 put comprezed air in the feulline n c if theres a bluckage there also

You should be able to remove the fuel line at the pump to verify there is no blockage. It should flow fuel freely, at least mine did. Do you have the line hooked up to the right port on the pump - in and out? Lastly, since you did a recent engine rebuild, did the machine shop install a mechanical fuel pump eccentric? Probably a long shot, but worth mentioning.

Ok I think I know what i did wrong, Dose any one know which side is the in and which one is the out? One has a scerw in and the other one is allready fitted... Here is what it looks like..

inlet should be one closest to tank
out to carb should be one closest to front of car

very easy mistake

Never mind there right, that wasnt the problem...

Tomarro I will check all the lines that go to the tank.. maybe the steal line has a hole in it?

Check the lines but I would suspect a small hole would produce a fuel leak. Check the sending unit while you have the lines unattached. Good luck and let me know. Have you tried running your inlet hose to a fuel can yet?

Along the lines of the fuel pump eccentric - make sure that the lever on the pump is on the correct side of the eccentric. If installed incorrectly the eccentric will come around and push the lever up rather than down.

EDIT - upon thinking about this I may be feeding you missinformation. I'll leave this to one of the more knowedgable guys to back me up (or shoot me down). It would all depend on just how far in that lever goes in to contact the eccentric.

There is no "shooting down" when it comes to troubleshooting/brainstorming. I like to see someone using their head. In my experience (not saying it can't be done) it would be very hard to get the fuel pump in wrong. From what I've encountered, when it won't "fit" you just turn the crank (SOCKET AND WRENCH) till it fits snug with block.

I had the hardest time after i replaced my fuel system... I ended up using a hand pump and bringing the fuel straight up to the fuel pump... after a few cranks the engine started right up. Try that.

oh it can be installed wrong, i've done it. however the eccentric doesn't push the pump arm up, rather it doesn't move the arm at all.

i would guess you have a cracked rubber line somewhere between the tank and the pump allowing the pump to suck air rather than fuel. another thing is if the engine was out of the car for quite a while the fuel line could be plugged, mud dobbers, spider and other bugs like to build nests in them.

Sorry Guys i am having Midterm hell over here, but tomarro I am going to take the bulge pump off my boat and try to pre pump the fuel into the line and i will replace some lines too I allreay got everything just need to go out there and do it. lol
