Fuel Neck Question

I have a 2001 mustang GT and the pipe that the gas goes through in order to get to the tank has rusted, and I found 3 little holes that are leaking gas as I pump it only(not too much but gas is expensive these days). Now I took that little plastic hose that is zipped tied to the pipe off today and wow did I take a lot of rust off. Now my question is, what should I do to repair? Do I just use something like J B Liquid Weld to fix it, or should I just buy a new one and replace it? If I do attempt to replace it, would I need to take the whole tank out?

I would replace it if I were you. Call your local salvage yards to see if they have one. That would likely be the cheapest place to get one. And yes, it would be a whole lot easier to drop the entire tank. Not that hard to do tho. I've done it twice in the past month . Just make sure to run the gas down less than 1/8 of a tank, it'll make it alot easier.

replace it. i don't think the parts are that expensive. you probably won't have to drop the tank, but it will make it easier. you'll have to remove the exhaust on that side tho if i remember correctly.

hmmm, Im starting to sea more and more of this and Im starting to wonder if the new "blended" fuels that have Alcohol in them are the culprits, as alcohol will attract more water than non-alcohol based fuels

I just bought the new filler neck and am going to install it. So it looks like ill have to remove the right exaust pipe. One of the things that is confusing me how I am going to get the bottom of the fuel neck filler out of the tank(were the spring is)? It seems like a simple rubber gasket holding it in place, but do i just attempt to pull it out? And the new bottom, do i just push it into the gasket to get it to hookup with the gas tank?

I just added dual cobra pumps in my roush. You dont have to remove any exhaust pieces, Just run it down in fuel to make it easier then unbolt the bolts inside fuel door, loosen straps on tank, lower the tank, (I used a floor jack to hold it up)disconnect fuel lines(makes it easier to maneuver the tank) then pull the filler neck out through the grommet. You should replace grommet also. I think it was $5 or $7 dollars. put some lube on it when pushing the filler neck in, so you dont push it into the tank. Its a very tight fit. Hope this helps

Put a little grease on the grommet on the tank and the filler tube before you try to slide her home. I broke that grommet/seal on the tank trying to get the filler tube into it and didn't know it until I went to fill up at the gas station, not fun. Gas everywhere.

Good things you boughta new one. They list at about 114 dollars I think. I had this problem with my mod swap car. My 72K donor car was rotted. Someone mentioned a salvage yard. MY dad owns one, I work there. EVERY car I went to was rotted out. That plastic peice zipped tied on is what does it. Cut that thing off, and paint that thing with a good rust preventive primer and paint. I found an 04 with 4K on it we had sitting out there, so I was good with that one.

Upon installation, becareful not to break that safety roll over valve at the end of it. There is a couple peices that break easily and will fasll into the tank.
